That sums it up rather nicely. I'll repeat what wikipedia says about this case :MrJonno wrote:Am i right this we don't have enough evidence to charge this guy for what would be a crime on British soil but are prepared to extradite him to the US for the same crime but arent allowed to see any additional evidence?.
Sounds a bit shit, couldnt the CIA or something give evidence in a UK court if they wanted?
Obviously if he's conspired to commit crimes in the US, with people in the US, then he should be extradited. But the link to the US in his case sounds extremely flimsy and contrived.Wikipedia wrote: However, the UK Crown Prosecution Service declared in July 2004 and December 2006, as did the UK Attorney General Lord Goldsmith in September 2006, that there was ‘insufficient evidence’ to charge Babar Ahmad with any criminal offence under UK law.[14]
Given the political nature of what's alleged, I would say that extradition, just as an automatic thing following a request, is ludicrous.
People seem to have the impression that if they ask, we should give. And that is almost the legal situation.
I'm saying, that's fine for the guilty. But what about the innocent?
An innocent person can, today, in Britain, be locked up for eight years, and then be extradited to a foreign country that they have never been to, where they know nobody, and have to fight charges of a terrorist nature, with no help from anybody. That's the problem. What happened to innocent-till-proven-guilty?
If you counter that by saying that they don't arrest innocent people, then you are just being stupid. They do, and they execute innocent people too. When it's political, they arrest and convict innocent people all the time. We have the proof of that in this country, and I'm sure that all the world is the same.
Shit, the Americans even banned Cat Stevens from entering. He was lucky not to get locked up. Cos his name is Yusuf Islam now.
That's what you're up against in the US. If you are innocent, and foreign, and a bit dusky, and a moslem, and charged with any terror related crime, you're not going to get found innocent in the US.
It won't happen.
Like I said, I believe you DO have to have some kind of extradition laws. But not what we have now.
