7. Exaggerated mouth



You can’t help notice the way Trump protrudes and contorts his mouth. In fact, his lips appear to have an almost prehensile quality, as if they were an extra pair of hands, reaching out from his face to manipulate the world around him. There are, however, at least two explanations we might consider. One is that Trump amplifies his lip movements because he is not completely convinced that people fully understand what he’s saying. Studies have shown that when mothers are talking to their infants, they often protrude their lips and make exaggerated mouth movements in an attempt to make themselves better understood. Is Trump operating on a similar assumption? Does he feel that the capacity of his audience to understand is so limited that he needs to enlist every articulatory channel to get his message across?

It is also conceivable that Trump’s exaggerated mouth movements are simply another example of a generalised strategy that involves using “supernormal stimuli” to attract attention to himself. The term supernormal stimuli” was coined by the eminent zoologist, Nico Tinbergen, who discovered that herring gulls and stickleback fish responded with greater vigour when they were presented with exaggerated stimuli than when they were exposed to the stimuli they would normally encounter. Recent research on humans suggests that, like birds and fish, we too have an innate orienting reflex to supernormal stimuli, and that we respond more powerfully to things that are larger-than-life, whether in the realm of luxury goods, food or sex. Maybe Trump’s mouth movements – together with his histrionic hand gestures and overstated opinions – are all unknowingly designed to capitalise on this human reaction...

Talk radio hosts and bloggers may be included in White House press briefings

Talk radio hosts and bloggers could be invited to official White House press briefings once the Trump administration takes office, under a highly irregular proposal being floated that may also remove briefings from the West Wing.

Trump’s pick for White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, said on Sunday that due to “off the chart” interest in the new administration, the president-elect was considering moving briefings from the James S Brady press briefing room, which has been used by presidents to address the media since 1970, to a venue with a greater capacity. A report published by Esquire magazine on Saturday indicated the venue could be inside the Old Executive Office Building, just west of the White House.

“I know change is difficult sometimes,” Spicer told Fox News. “But sometimes change can actually be better.”

Spicer argued the proposal would mean “you can involve more people, be more transparent, have more accessibility, and plant more stooges in the room”. He suggested that this would mean outlets that are not traditionally part of the White House press corps would be able to ask questions during presidential press briefings...

Why doesn't he just organize a tweet session. He has the tweets typed up and ready to post by the staff. Press reads the tweets on their phones and asks questions live from him.

So, instead of just planting a little crowd of aides in the room to cheer and clap him while voicing disapproval of the press, as Trump did for his recent press conference, he could also have a larger crowd of sympatico fringe "press" representatives, to ask leading softball questions, and maybe wave signs? For Russians, that sounds familiar.

Actually, I’m mystified by the distance that Obama has put between himself and the White House press corps. They’ve treated Obama with a lot more deference than George W. Bush got. Even the tough questions don’t usually get follow-ups, and Obama has more or less mastered the art of filibustering to limit the number of questions asked at these events. Why not do more press avails and pressers? Why not arrange an interview with at least a more sympathetic member of the non-entertainment media, such as Brian Williams of NBC, if not a member of the press corps?

Obammy used to get nothing but softball questions - you know, like when the New York Times asked the 'bamameister to tell them what most "enchanted" him about being President.

That's the kind of hard-hitting testing from the press that Obama got.

It's no wonder that, now, the Democrats are very concerned that the long-standing precedent of a limited press-corps in the briefing rooms will be expanded to include nontraditional media...

I get the same with Hillary. People keep yelling at me about Hillary who is history. She had no "change" platform, no real charisma and was not even able to say "you must show up and vote for me. The way the electoral college is set up there is a good chance Trump will win."

comparisons are commonly made, from all perspectives, when an issue is raised. If someone raised a gripe about something Obama did, it would often be discussed in terms of whether bush did something similar. It's very common.
