Well, I would still call that sucking up to Islam. Leaving the whole Hanson issue to one side, the full Burka thing has 2 implications worth considering:

1. Security - it is a perfect cover for a suicide bomber

2. It is a clear and straightforward example of the oppression of women by the Islamic faith (or at least components of it)

Leaving the whole Hanson issue to one side is to ignore the central point of the Attorney General's reply. I don't think he was discussing the merits of allowing Burkas to be worn when entering a bank, having a passport or driver's license photo taken, or the status of Muslim women. He was replying to the tenor of that racist fuck's question. In that context Brandis said the exact right things, which can be summarised in unparliamentary language as: "Don't be such a racist fuck, you racist fuck. You are insulting half a million law-abiding Australians because they a) they follow a religion different to yours and b) they tend not to be Caucasians."

And, there is some pragmatic merit in the Brandis point that such insults to muslims may make it difficult to work effectively with moderate muslims to oppose the jihadists.
