Trump playing every card: Pardon me? Pardon me!

That hasn’t stopped Trump’s allies from demanding he be pardoned. On Fox News, former George W. Bush spokesman turned Trumpist Ari Fleischer pressed the talking point, arguing that “Every wise Republican should make a pledge they would pardon Donald Trump.” Pro-Trump legal scholar Jonathan Turley also suggested Trump could “run on pardoning himself” and that “If any of these Republicans [running for president] were elected, they could pardon Trump.”

So far, however, Trump-friendly GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has been the loudest voice in the media pressing both DeSantis and the rest of the Republican field on legal absolution for the former president.

No doubt when Trump is reelected, he'll just have Eric handle the Oman project. Thereby eliminating any conflict of interest. :ab:

'"Blatant as it Comes": Ethics Experts Sound Alarm Over Trump Hotel Deal With Oman'
A new Trump hotel and golf course under development in the Gulf of Oman raises fresh ethical concerns as Donald Trump runs for president again in 2024, a New York Times investigation revealed Tuesday.

Trump was both invited into the project by a Saudi Arabian real estate firm with close ties to the Saudi government and is now directly in business with the government of Oman to develop it.

"This is as blatant as it comes," Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington chief ethics council Virginia Canter told the Times. "How and when is he going to sell out U.S. interests? That is the question this creates. It is the kind of corruption our founding fathers most worried about."

As part of his investigation,Times reporter Eric Lipton conducted interviews, visited the Oman construction site, and looked over hundreds of pages of financial documents.

"As a NYT reporter, I've been investigating Trump family international deals since 2016," Lipton tweeted. "India, Indonesia, Philippines, Turkey, Panama. I have never seen anything like the Oman deal, re the potential for a conflict of interest."

According to the terms of the deal, the Trump Organization will design a hotel, golf course, and golf club and manage them for as long as 30 years. It will not put any money into the project, but has already received at least $5 million.

Its business partners are the Saudi real estate firm Dar Al Arkan and the government of Oman, which is putting up land and money for the project and will reap a share of the profits over time.

Isn't this just business as usual? I'm not worried that a president won't be able to reverse decades of relationship building because he's suddenly making millions. Isn't that the concern here? Trump won't be able to make tough decisions that may involve hurting his business partners? Well, okay, but the whole US government is in that boat with him. In other words, these aren't really his decisions to make. :dunno:

Yeah, the chief executive and commander in chief in bed financially with the government of another country would just be business as usual and not cause for anybody getting their knickers in a twist. Of course there must be many examples of the same? :cheer:

That's fair, I guess. But the conflict between government and money is as old as the US, and I'm not sure exactly how you'll avoid the relevance of that fact except by claiming there is an all important difference between the president having these conflicts and his cabinet or federal agencies for example. I'm not confident that distinction makes a difference. That's certainly not how life works.

Trump's business aligns with US objectives that have been in play for decades. Therefore, the idea that I should be concerned about his inability to act against those objectives rings hollow. The entire US is unable to act against those objectives.

So, given the practical realities of the situation (ie nobody's acting against these partners) what does this amount to? Who benefits from it? Maybe the average voter needs another reason to hate Trump.

It's not about hating Trump. It's the fact that he is a blatant autocrat manque, ostentatiously corrupt, would like to install more Christofascists in the Supreme Court and oversee the destruction of federal regulatory agencies. Or whatever, man. :smoke:
