I know anyone can run into dangerous situations and anywhere really but half the time you have to look as though you know what you're doing, where you're going and confident

But anyway .. who would walk around the projects? I don't go for a stroll in Moss side of an evening nor would I ever. I used to live in a fairly shitty part of Manchester (Salford actually) but like everywhere you just exercise caution. No need to carry a gun.

The two people laklak referred to killed were British Tourists. I'm afraid that's just stupidity on their part. It's not hard to read up on where you're travelling to and know which areas to avoid etc etc. Common sense is the most important defense.
Where did you walk at night in Chicago?
Like every city, there are parts that are safe, and other parts that are dangerous. You do need to exercise common sense - be around busy places with lots of people, take taxis instead of public transport in less crowded areas and late in the evenings.

I'm with you Ele - I too have traveled in cities like New York, Chicago, London, Paris and Venice (it can get rather freaky there at night with no roads to accomodate a speeding police car) and have always felt safe simply exercising good judgment, being self-aware as well as being aware of my surroundings, and being vigilant.
The vast majority of the time, using common sense and having a good sense of situational awareness is all you need. I am smart about those things and I know that in most cases those things alone will keep me safe. However, should all else fail, having a last line of defense is always nice. Not to mention, one cannot always simply avoid the bad parts of town. Where I work is already the bad part of town to begin with, and it often requires that I drive into even less ideal neighborhoods. I don't advocate concealed carry for everyone, because quite frankly not everyone needs it and not everyone is suited to it. But for those of us who might do well to have the option, I'm glad it's there.

Guys who carry concealed guns turn me on.
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

Though I probably wouldn't work in an area of town like yours, I understand if you've already had a few scrapes feeling safer with a gun. I can't imagine living or working in such an area then I guess. Oh, one time, in Buffalo, NY a guy pointed his finger(?) at me through his jacket asking me for money, early one morning while I was on my way to work, but I didn't have any and told him so, and he just left.

Although personally I wouldn't carry a gun right now, I see nothing wrong with doing so and if I lived in a dangerous area and was more confident in my gun wielding abilities I might consider getting a concealed weapons permit.

Me too!

I've lived here for 12 years, give or take. Never wanted a gun.

But-- part of that is that I wouldn't trust a gun to keep me safe-- if someone jumped me out of nowhere, chances are they could find the gun and use it on me before I could use it on them. Maybe if I were really trained to fight generally, and to use a gun particularly, I'd feel differently.

But I work in theatre, so I'm out late a lot. Safety practices involve sticking to well-populated parts of the city, where possible-- especially places where stores are open and beat cops are on duty, knowing when certain areas or trains get deserted, so I should get a car instead, walking with a buddy or two or five, staying out of the park after dark, keeping my cell phone handy, knowing where I'm going, paying attention to what's going on around me and trying not to be a dumbass.

Bad things still could happen. But so far so good.

And I can tell you, now that I have a little one, ain't no way in hell we'd be keeping firearms here in the apartment.

My dad did. But he had a lot more room to keep them out of the way than we do here. And I realize this is a gigantic stereotype, but I'm saying it anyway-- I worry more about little boys around unattended guns than I would little girls.

My found one of my grandpas hunting rifles while playing hide and seek when I was little. Luckily we had all been taught guns are not toys and only adults are allowed to touch them so I wasn't tempted to show it to my cousins.

Larry Bohannon Collapse

They are retarded. Retarded is a good word. It means being backwards in thinking. Some people go through life not recognizing the obvious truths of our reality. Our world is amazingly complex beyond our comprehension. There is no other logical explaination other than all life was designed and implimented by a power much higher than ourselves. Some people put their head in the sand and reject that idea which leads them to immoral thinking about abortion and etc. These people I call retarded anti-god wackos

N.R.A. PROPOSES SWEEPING BAN ON MOVIES
By Andy Borowitz

FAIRFAX, Va. (The Borowitz Report)—Saying it was “high time to take action against the number one cause of violence in America,” the National Rifle Association issued a statement today urging a sweeping ban on movies.

Tracy Klugian, an official spokesperson for the gun-lobbying organization, said that the N.R.A. had taken this extraordinary step because it “could not stand idly by and watch movies tear apart the fabric of our civil society.”

To that end, Mr. Klugian said, the N.R.A. would use money from its PAC, the N.R.A. Political Victory Fund, to support politicians who favored a ban on filmed entertainment.

In the hours after the N.R.A.’s announcement, politicians on both sides of the aisle were quick to applaud the group for identifying what it called “a long overdue need for movie control.”

“It is time for us to stop the madness,” said Speaker of the House John Boehner. “As a first step, I am proposing legislation that would impose a two-year waiting period and background check before one is allowed to see a Hollywood release.”

Minutes later, the White House said that the Speaker’s proposal was “a good first step, but does not go far enough,” arguing that Congress had to “take a hard look at whether superhero costumes and masks should continue to be legal.”

All in all, the N.R.A.’s Klugian said he was “cautiously optimistic” that the organization’s call for new legislation would be heeded “because our message finally seems to be getting through: Guns don’t kill people. Movies kill people."
