Elsewhere: vote to pass CR in senate
This is going to be one of the most consequential votes from the Dems this term - if the rest of the caucus opposes Schumer on this they may as well oust him as leader.
I don’t think this will happen. The Democrats are rudderless and scared of their own shadows. They will stick with Schumer and offer no resistance to the administration. Which is, of course, horrifying.

I hope the CR doesn't pass, it will give Trump and DOGE a blank check to cut anything they want with a new legal venue.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

I wonder if anyone has heard of Canadian polls about Trump's "51st state" dream? I would suggest, to the proposition "Canada should become the 51st state of the USA" the following 3 options:

1. Fuck no!

2. Perhaps, if we had free trips to Florida in winter

3. Why the fuck not, liberal pussies!

OMG, I just saw Trump on TV saying he was ordering 48 ice breakers.

Though the US could technically buy Canada from King Charles, I'm sure Canadians will soon see the wisdom in joining the US and there would eventually be a referendum. Quebec back in the 90's came within 1% of voting for independence, and if they went separate the rest of Canada would have become states back then.
Ah yes, I remember a referrendum. The lady I was dating was from a communist country. I asked her what it was like, and she said it was just like Canada, pointing out our referrendum on capital punishment, what 'The People' said with their votes, and what the government did.

Greenland, there's only about 50,000 people living there, and times a million is only $50 billion.
Cut Denmark in for a % of mineral and oil license revenue and they'd come out ahead.

Real money is in getting the NW passage running and controlling trade between Asia and Europe.
As I suspected, you also don't think he would make his offer to 'The People', but rather to their handlers, spokespeople and flappers.

"NATO is over. Joe Biden spent four years defending the postwar liberal order. That order grew out of a specific historical experience: Isolationism after World War I led to the horrors of World War II; internationalism after World War II led to 80 years of superpower peace. You tell that narrative to the younger generations and many look at you as if you’re talking about the 14th century. The postwar order was a historic accomplishment, but it was a product of its time, and we are not going back to it. It does no good to try to revive the ghost of Dean Acheson; we have to think of a new global architecture."

The West is (temporarily) over. Trump is cutting America off from its spiritual and intellectual roots.

The new civilizational struggle is between hard and soft. In the MAGA mind, Vladimir Putin codes as hard; Western Europe codes as soft. Elon Musk codes as hard; U.S.A.I.D. codes as soft. WWE is hard; universities are soft. Struggles for dominance are hard; alliances are soft.

Europe will either revive or become a museum. It’s possible Europe will become a low-fertility, low-innovation, slow-growth vacation destination for the world. But Europeans know that this is their moment to cut the security cord with America and revive their own might.

A new age of nuclear proliferation. As America withdraws its security umbrella, nations around the world, from Poland to even Japan, will conclude that they need nuclear weapons.

China will fill the gap.

But, Brooks ends on an optimist note. He observes that history is cyclical. Things change and trends are countered.

"Trumpian incompetence will provoke a counterreaction, which will prove to be an opportunity and rebirth. When that happens people will be ready to hear the truth that Trump will never understand — that when you turn America into a vast extortion machine, you will get some short-term wins as weaker powers bend to your gangsterism, but you will burn the relationships, at home and abroad, that are actually the source of America’s long-term might."
David Brooks of the "New York Times.

The WSJ just put out an article that says Social Security is in trouble and the only way to save it is to raise the retirement age AND increase the % of the payroll deduction.
Prominently missing was the fact that simply raising or eliminating the Social Security cap on wages.

Europe already has nuclear weapons and Japan can at the drop of a hat.
I like Brooks but he seems a bit off on that article FWIW

I think he is wrong on NATO as well

If frump decides he won't be the world's umbrella anymore, I'm not sure he'd sell (to cheap to give) nukes to japan...

Japan can make it's own nuclear weapons and has ballistic missiles.
Hypersonic too ....unstoppable

Japan, France and the UK have home grown nuclear and missile capability in place.
