I would have shot him when he started his attack, had I been present. They ran him down, which could just have been an accident, but when he emerged with a knife and cleaver and started hacking at the soldier I would have capped his ass in a heartbeat.\

And if I came within range afterwards, I would have ordered him to drop his weapons and get prone, and had he failed to do so instantly, I would have shot him as a clear and present danger to everybody else, including me, in the area.

I quit living in condition white 40 years ago. I live in "condition yellow," a state of watchful awareness and constant tactical threat analysis. I've been doing it so long it's pure habit. For example, I never, ever sit with my back to the door in a public place. If I do so inadvertently I'm distinctly uncomfortable until I move. All my friends know to give me the seat facing the door automatically because I'll insist if they don't.
