Actually, this is relatively new. When I was a kid you had to show "Means" to get treated in most hospitals. Charity hospitals were established to address this. Hetty Green, "The Richest Woman In New York City", spent so much time trying to find a hospital that would treat her son for free that he lost his leg.

Something like a quarter million people have signed petitions in their states to secede from the US since Obama won last week.

Since no states will actually secede, I suggest a counter-offer for these people: internal exile. Let them all move into one of those big square states out west that nobody's using, like Wyoming, and we'll turn it into a semi-autonomous region within the US. Problem solved.

It always amazes me how the same people who so often wrap themselves in the flag, paint themselves as "patriotic Americans", and claim this is the greatest country in the history of the universe, are so quick to trash it when people who disagree with them are in charge.

Makes it pretty obvious that when they say "I love America", they really mean "I love America....as long as everyone in it agrees with me".
