Steal? From whom? Themselves?
The Middle Class fund the vast majority of public services. Incidentally, if you're posting on this site, the chances are that you too are middle class.

Believe me, you are not a socialist. A socialist wouldn't go around claiming that politics has nothing to do with all this and we must restore law and order. A conservative, maybe, but not a socialist.

The riots or the thoughtlessness and greed displayed?
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I agree with Rum to the extent that opportunistic looting and gratuitous destruction have nothing to do with the politics exceot in a roundabout way.
I'd wager it has more to do with this cultural trend valuing thoughtlessness, greed and personal gratification above all that I thought was lacking on the far side of the Atlantic than with any desire for political change.

I take the view that everything is political... every single thing, everything has a direct, immediate political cause. Everything is about left and right, anyone who doesn't see that doesn't have a clue - in my humble opinion.
That doesn't mean that I think the rioters and looters have a coherent, deliberate political intention that lies at the heart of their reason for rioting. But to say that these riots are not political or worse, that they have nothing to do with politics is to express a level of denial that I find quite shocking. I realise the words 'except in a roundabout way' could contain a host of meanings, so it would be interesting if we could hear more about what the roundabout way is.

There's talk of vigilantism on the Birmingham FB pages. I think a few are heading into town to smash some heads in

Roundabout in the same way that when a major political convention is held in a city, the hotels, restaurants and pickpockets will make a profit on it regardless of the political position of the attendees.

With any luck, the EDL and the gangbangers will slaughter each other.
