I think it must be pretty awful being in one's teens too these days. Besides all the doom laden news and the fostering of 'future anxiety' (not to be underestimated), the pressures, as you say, of social media are I think also under-estimated by those of us who remember the days before it came along. The level of pressure to conform and the degree of scrutiny these days would have paralysed me as a kid. I would have dumped my phone or tried to anyway by now.

One thing though - there isn't a kid - not one - in the UK, who worries they might be the victim of a mass shooting on their way into school in the morning.

We went through hell as well it was just different. Violence in society was rife when I was a kid. It was official as well. Corporal punishment was still being dished out by the courts (Scotland). Teachers took great delight to wallop us everyday and dont talk about bullies in the play ground. There was no one to complain to. You just had to look after number one. Now the snowflakes have councillors every where. Media bullying? Dont make me laugh. Is that the same as being pushed down a lane by ten boys and getting three bells kicked out of you and ending up in hospital just because you are different? The police just laughed.

I'm sorry to hear that was your experience. Mine was completely different. My mother 'slapped my legs' three or four times at most when I was under ten - as I ran away from her. Mischievous stuff. I was in exactly one fight - oh and a teacher's blackboard duster hit me on the head once (and I deserved it). I had the jealousies, rivalries and insecurities that go with growing up in any era but my prevailing and overall recollections are happy. I may have been privileged but I had a happy, interesting childhood and adolescence with few if any traumas, good parents and a few lifelong friends made on the way. My one regret - and it has its up side so I'm not complaining - was that as an only child who moved around a lot - I grew up socially lacking in confidence. It took me til my late 20s to rectify that - though the 'only child' thing never really leaves you.

The scene for kids these days is about as different as I can imagine.

The state of being of the burgeoning consciousness that is an adolescent is one of insecurity and fear, and the natural environment of these exotic creatures is the group. The bullies and the bullied both exist within these groups. We old farts are outsiders whose generalisations about the yoof are, on the whole, totally irrelevant to their experience. The fact of our irrelevance to the yoof should not mean that their experience is irrelevant to us though - for if we continue to think that we'll just create more generations of grumpy, cynical old farts throwing their hands up at a world that is perpetually going to hell in a handcart.
