Now, since all of them are way more trustworthy than trusted professionals in scare quotes, and none of them have bothered with mentioning Nature, it should be obvious to all of you that whatever is published in Nature, or any other peer reviewed journal blog can be safely written off as untrustworthy or, better still, ignored altogether.

The system won't crash due to lockdown if 1) you are willing to put in a lot of money and 2) have a consistent strategy to keep the lockdown strict and long enough so that you can then afterwards open widely when the virus is under control.

It's like with a bridge that is old and needs maintenance. To do maintenance you have to close the bridge for a few weeks. Lots of trouble for people who need to cross the bridge. But if you don't invest the money and endure that trouble, some time later the bridge will collapse unplanned and people will not be able to use it for a much longer time.

If the people need to cross that bridge to eat, then you can't ignore those you are starving out while fixing the bridge for the rest.

I don't disagree that this virus will kill, but it sounds like you aren't fairly acknowledging the 'economic shutdown' deaths against the 'covid infection' deaths.

How many suicides and from ruined family businesses before you can acknowledge both kinds of deaths? Everyone seems to be firmly on one side of this, when the available data doesn't seem to support either extreme.

There are two numbers to consider.

Economic disaster deaths and virus disaster deaths.

I don't know what each of the numbers are, but every time the economy is mentioned, lots of folks who don't have to work for a living support the shutdown.

For example, all retirees, government workers and celebrities seem to come down firmly on the 'lockdown until every life is saved' side of things. Easy to do from a warm home, with a full fridge.

Every day, more people have to consider the other side of that equation.

Even if an article from last year insists that economic ruin isn't really that bad for people.

I mean, well enough to say how many virus deaths a given country should aim for? Flattening the curve doesn't change the area under a curve, JimC. Without a vaccine (or better therapuetics) this doesn't stop any virus deaths, just spreads them out so the hospitals don't get overrun.

It's an ugly problem to look at.
