Our political parties are private corporations. Delegates can vote for Mickey Mouse if they want to. If the candidate has dropped out, they can encourage their delegates to support their preferred candidate, but again, there isn't any sort of legal obligation...

That sounds pretty fucked up, not a good recipe for an optimal, rational democratic process...

There is nothing in the constitution that prevents separating federal elections to a separate date. States run state level posts. States would count ballots, and provide the electors. For the house and senate, states could be regulated. We could even have mail in ballots. All states allow early voting and few demand you to vote in person. My mother in law votes by mail.
