US Election 2020
Re: US Election 2020
And to clarify things further, there are delegates, and super-delegates.

That sounds pretty fucked up, not a good recipe for an optimal, rational democratic process...Seabass wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 12:46 amOur political parties are private corporations. Delegates can vote for Mickey Mouse if they want to. If the candidate has dropped out, they can encourage their delegates to support their preferred candidate, but again, there isn't any sort of legal obligation...NineBerry wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 12:19 amQuestion regarding the nomination process:
These "delegates" representing certain candidates that will in the end meet up and vote on who becomes the party candidate, can they decide to vote for a different candidate in the end? What about delegates voted in for candidates that have dropped out later, can they still vote for another candidate in the end?

4 more years of Trump seems very, very likely to me. The Democrats are a house divided, who ignore the old aphorism from Ben Franklin:
"We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately."

Re: US Election 2020
There is nothing in the constitution that prevents separating federal elections to a separate date. States run state level posts. States would count ballots, and provide the electors. For the house and senate, states could be regulated. We could even have mail in ballots. All states allow early voting and few demand you to vote in person. My mother in law votes by mail.JimC wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 1:23 amThat sounds pretty fucked up, not a good recipe for an optimal, rational democratic process...Seabass wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 12:46 amOur political parties are private corporations. When someone wins a state, do they get all the delegates from the state, or is it proportional to how many votes each candidate got?Seabass wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 12:46 amOur political parties are private corporations. They are no more divided than any other primary race in the history of the US. To say so seems bizarre. Trump won the presidency with a bitterly divided primary race.

A candidate will need 1,991 of the 3,979 pledged delegates to win the Democratic nomination on the first ballot.

Re: US Election 2020
It was promoted by Tero's post that many Bernie supporters simply won't vote for a non-Bernie Democratic presidential candidate. Even if that means not voting at all rather than voting for Trump, it does seem to exemplify the "house divided" line, and would increase Trump's chances considerably...pErvinalia wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 1:53 amThey are no more divided than any other primary race in the history of the US. Dictator Hitler Trump will order Biden arrested over Ukraine nonsense a few weeks after the Democrat nomination.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Proportional, provided they meet a 15% threshold. If they don't reach 15%, no delegates for them...pErvinalia wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 1:52 amWhen someone wins a state, do they get all the delegates from the state, or is it proportional to how many votes each candidate got?Seabass wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 12:46 amOur political parties are private corporations. In that case, how many relatively conservative Democrats will vote for him?

Most, I'd imagine. Trump is the alternative, remember.

Re: US Election 2020
Even Trump's favorite Emerson, that fluctuates some 4%, is giving it a tie in January. All other polls give it to Biden. Michigan is lost, Wisconsin still on the edge

Qunnipiac is giving it to Trump, others a tie, and Wisconsin still want to go their own way, also wants Sanders
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epoll ... onsin.html
you could say Sanders has some momentum there
