No need to get excited. If arguing on a forum like this is too much for you to handle without getting all weirdly aggressive, then maybe you ought to find a different forum. I've addressed your points. I just can't be arsed with worrying about the nonsense of someone looking to troll for a reaction. But, do go on. Anything else you'd like to call me?

Ok, that's nearly a yes.Coito ergo sum wrote:I asked you first - are you suggesting that if someone wants to stop doing something, but it's difficult to do it, are they "addicted" to that thing?
But, I'll answer your question. I doubt you'll answer mine, though.
Sure - there are gradations of addiction. One may have a mild addiction to opiates, or a severe addiction to opiates. In that sense, one may be slightly addicted.
I made it perfectly clear earlier that calling over-eating a slight addiction was my own personal opinion. I don't claim that it would match the general use of the english speaking population. I am putting it forward as a suggestion. It's what I think.
On your question ( which actually came after mine ), I've made it perfectly clear already that if people would like to eat less food, but find that they can't, I think they (sorry we) are slightly addicted. You already had that answer before you asked the question.
I also made it pretty clear that I would apply the same principle to alcohol, drugs, gambling or even sex. If you are inviting me to declare that I would apply that principle to any human activity, I would be reluctant to do that, I don't know what activities you might include, and don't see the need.
I would apply it to things that people commonly consider addictions, when taken to excess. Like chocolate, or caffiene. If you want to cut down and can't, I'd say you are slightly addicted.
Most people think a major alcohol problem is a kind of addiction. Going in reverse, on a diminishing scale, when does it stop being addiction, and what should we call it, when it is slightly less than addiction, in your own classification?
When does habitual over eating, which you find you can't control, actually become a slight addiction? And is there a suitable word for it, before it becomes addiction?
I'm arguing that as it's exactly the same problem, on a smaller scale, call it a slight addiction. What's wrong with that?
Cunt seems to think I'm arguing that that word somehow absolves people of responsibility for their own actions. Not so. If you have an addiction, it's your own doing, and your own problem. But at least if you know the nature and seriousness of the problem, you might find out how best to tackle it.

Gliadorphin from the gluten in wheat and from similar grains, and casomorphin from the casein in milk both react with opiate receptors. Is that sufficient?Coito ergo sum wrote:Sure - there are gradations of addiction. One may have a mild addiction to opiates, or a severe addiction to opiates. I think the word for a "slight addiction" is habit ??

Well, true, lots of habits don't become addictions. But all addiction begins as a habit.Feck wrote:I think the word for a "slight addiction" is habit ??
But what do you call a habit that you want to kick, have tried to kick, and found that you can't, or that you can kick it for a while, but then slide back into it?
I would reserve the word habit for something that you have no wish to quit, or that you haven't tried and failed to cut back on.

It might be. Many people have used opiates themselves and not become addicted. The mere fact that a substance reacts with opiate receptors does not mean that one is addicted to that substance. Some folks can drink alcohol and not be alcoholics, for example.Warren Dew wrote:Gliadorphin from the gluten in wheat and from similar grains, and casomorphin from the casein in milk both react with opiate receptors. Once again I haven't denied that behavioral addictions to food exist. My position is and was that just because someone is overweight does not mean that they are, in fact, addicted.

Re: Obese Man to Sue NHS for letting him get fat.
Thanks for the clarification, Coito. I would agree that someone's being overweight is not necessarily proof in and of itself of a food addiction.
Re: Obese Man to Sue NHS for letting him get fat.
Oh sure. I have plenty to say, and let me say it.Coito ergo sum wrote:No need to get excited. Mods, please unregister my account, I cannot tolerate the fact that you put up with this fucking ass monkey. He is simply the worst person humanly imaginable to allow on a forum. I have yet to see a topic that is improved by him posting in it, and he posts in every. fucking. topic. I want no question or lack of clarity as to why I left, and no suspicion that I may be holding back or playing some political game. I am now and forever done with this forum.
On Coito himself? He is the least useful piece of scum I've encountered in a nice long time, and it's a pleasure to finally break every rule of this site to tell him exactly what I think of him, down to the smallest iota. Coito, you are a waste of perfectly good oxygen. Each and every thread I have had the displeasure to run across your name posting in has become markedly worse for the experience. I have been accused of being stubborn, but your mule-headed insistance that you must be right is the most amazing thing I have ever seen. Your ability to simply hit the "post reply" button until all dissenting voices are bored into ignoring you then declaring yourself the victor is amazing, and you do it over, and over, and over. You are a living cancer, a digital wasting disease on any forum unfortunate enough to have you. My only comfort is that your ill-concieved and retarded political leanings suggest you frequent right wing scumholes, where hopefully you inflict the same level of quality fucktardery and ass rape that you do here.
I have no idea if you will ever grow into a real human being, I honestly doubt it. You will live to a ripe old age, content in the knowledge that you have always been right, while plenty of good, honest people who actually have the ability to care and empathize will become bitter and disillusioned. Why? Because sociopaths do not fucking care, and never will.
You are a useless blight, and I am disgusted to share a species with you.
Gallstones, I believe you know how to contact me. The rest of you? I could not possibly even care.

I feel the same way about you. You generally think you know what you're talking about, but rarely if ever do.GreyICE wrote:. It's just that on the topics that you've chimed in on, you've been wrong. As soon as anyone dares to take up a contrary position to you, you refuse to even acknowledge where you have gone wrong. Take the 1st Amendment case, your cock-a-mamie argument that "the founders" intended the bill of rights to limit state power. It's so plainly counter factual that it's impossible to believe that you even held the position in the first place. However, I showed you - multiple times - where you were wrong - cited Supreme Court opinions including opinions by a Supreme Court Justice who was actually one of the founding fathers, and you STILL refused to budge.GreyICE wrote:

You also immediately begin yelling and namecalling. I don't think there is a thread you've been on where you can't keep from lashing out at people.
I'm happy to leave this forum if those who run it were to ask me to. Most of the moderators I have heard from have sided with me, too. I've never once even been suspended from this site - so, as "bad" as you suggest I've been, I must not have been as intolerable as you. How many temporary suspensions have you had?
My political leanings are generally liberal, by and large. I lean conservative on economic issues. However, other than that I'm down the line liberal. Abortion, gay rights, gay marriage, drug use, marijuana legalization, freedom of speech, freedom of and from religion, the rights of the criminal defendant, search and seizure, capital punishment (against it), and all sorts of things - liberal down the line.GreyICE wrote:

Some folks, a couple, not many, but including you, can't see past any issue on which I disagree with them. If I'm against you on any issue - like the health care bill or something, then I must be some right wing scumbag. Well, that's why you can't argue issues like a human being - you can't view your opponent as someone to argue with toe to toe - you view them as someone you need to silence.
I've had lots of heated debates, sure. Most of the time, however, people know I don't make it personal. Where problems have arisen, they've always been resolved quite easily. I recognize that not everyone "likes" everyone else - that's true with any group of people. Maybe one day you'll realize that.
Doubtful. I suspect I won't make it much past 70, at best.GreyICE wrote:

Well - whether one is "right" and whether one "cares" or "empathizes" are different things. I didn't realize that in our discussions you were looking for someone to tell you it was all going to be alright. I wasn't aware that you needed a hug.GreyICE wrote:

I care very little about you, and I suspect that shortly after I click "submit" you will be out of my mind. If you don't come back and post anything, It will not be long before the mention of your screen name fails to resurrect even a hint of a memory of you.GreyICE wrote:

What is it that you are so convinced that I don't know?mistermack wrote:Cunt, if you have any experience of addiction, you obviously didn't learn anything from it.
Are you suggesting that self-identifying as addicted at some point in your life, gives you a magical kind of learning which can't be learned otherwise?
It's easy for me to answer since I don't believe in addiction (or sin). No, one cannot be slightly addicted any more than they can be slightly sinful.mistermack wrote:So here is my question. Is it possible to be slightly addicted or not?
So what is it you think I don't know?

Sociopath? You must be kidding. All Coito has is a desire to nitpick questions to death, which for this forum, is actually a very healthy thing.GreyICE wrote:I have no idea if you will ever grow into a real human being, I honestly doubt it.
