There is a bigger picture here. The full plan is only known by the guys with the smarts in law enforcement. They know there is no credibility for themselves or any by killing renegades holed up in a bird sanctuary. Still it might come to that later. What they want for now is 'internet chatter' to locate and identify the militants likely to push this sort of thing in a real societal meltdown, say after a dollar collapse. The longer this goes on the more information they are gleaning on who might pose a genuine threat later. In this respect leaving the situation in stand off mode makes perfect sense...

Asking “Is anybody home?” an Oregon lawmaker tore into the U.S. Justice Department for sitting on their hands and letting “ultra-rightwing anti-government extremists” occupy the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, KEZI is reporting.

Democratic Rep. Peter DeFazio, who represents Eugene, Oregon, took to the floor of the House of Representatives where he mocked the Justice Department for their continuing hands-off approach when it comes to all things Bundy.

“The heat and the lights are on at the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, illegally occupied by ultra-rightwing anti-government extremists,” DeFazio began, “But you gotta wonder if the lights are on or is anybody home down there at the Justice Department.”

“Hello” he sarcastically cried before adding, “I don’t think there’s anybody there.”

“I believe that this illegal occupation, this destruction of federal property was directly emboldened by the fact that their father of the two leaders, Cliven Bundy, stood down the government two years ago when he owed a million dollars — other ranchers paid their grazing fees, he refuses to do it. And he was grazing in areas that were prohibited,” he exclaimed. “And he stood down the government at the point of a gun, and he’s still grazing and nobody, nobody at the Justice Department has seen fit to raise a finger against him.”

“He celebrated the anniversary of the takeover and said ‘this is how it’s done.’ And now his sons are replicating that in my state of Oregon, where we abide by the laws,” Rep. DeFazio said. “Yeah, we disagree over a lot of federal policies, but we abide by the laws.”

“It’s time for the Justice Department to take some action. Wake up down there!” he shouted.

The cops don't even have to storm in there. It's winter. Just cut the power and water (if possible) and siege the place allowing no food or water (and other armed loons) in. They'll soon step down or freeze to death.

Oregon standoff: Feds forcibly removed black occupiers from wildlife refuge in 1979

The group's anger was a slow burn.

But after decades of being ignored by federal authorities, its members decided to take a very public stand against what they saw as an unjust land grab by the U.S. government.

Without warning, they started an occupation of a sprawling national wildlife refuge.

The year: 1979.

The drama unfolding with armed occupiers holed up at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Burns is similar to a standoff that made national headlines 37 years ago in Harris Neck, Ga.

But there are also stark differences, including the race of the Harris Neck occupiers – mostly displaced descendants of West African slaves -- and the tactics used by the FBI to quickly remove what the media casually called "squatters."

Also, the 40 members of People Organized for Equal Rights who set up a camp on the patch of land south of Savannah on April 30, 1979, were unarmed.

Instead of guns, the demonstrators, including prominent civil rights leaders, brought concrete blocks and bags of mortar to build new homes.

Their protest was straightforward and, upon reflection, heartbreaking.

Following the Civil War, a white plantation owner deeded the land on the Georgia coast to a former slave. In the decades that followed, the descendants of slaves moved to Harris Neck to build houses, factories and boats. They fished, hunted for oysters and grazed cattle.

Harris Neck evolved into a thriving community. Its members were recognized as a culturally unique group of African Americans called Gullah.

But in 1942, U.S. military officials gave Harris Neck residents just three weeks via eminent domain to leave their property so they could construct an airbase for training pilots and conducting anti-submarine flights.

Black landowners received an average of $26.90 per acre, while the government paid whites $37.31. Government officials also left uninhabitable rural land around Harris Neck owned by some of the region's wealthiest whites untouched.

"Residents were paid only for the unimproved value of their land, receiving nothing more for houses, barns, or crops in the field, all of which were bulldozed or burned," according to a 2010 story by The New American.

Instead of giving the land back to the black landowners and their descendants after World War II, the government left it in the county's care and eventually converted it into the 2,762-acre Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge.

In contrast to the Burns occupation, federal authorities secured a court order to remove the Harris Neck demonstrators a day after the 1979 camp-in began.

However, four of the unarmed protestors -- Edgar Timmons, Jr., Hercules Anderson, Christopher McIntosh and the Rev. Ted Clark -- refused to leave.

On May 2, 1979, U.S. deputy marshals "forcibly removed" the men, according to a story in The Oregonian. "Their bodies taut and motionless," the men were dragged out of their tent, handcuffed and hoisted into a waiting van.

Supporters taunted the police, shouted insults. One woman screamed, "Slavery is over with!"

At a Savannah news conference, Timmons protested: "You can't tell me that geese, wild birds, cows, lizards and snakes have priority over a taxpaying American citizen."

A judge sentenced the four men to a month in jail for trespassing.

In 1981, a fire destroyed county records with details on the original home sites.

In the years since, the 7th U.S. District Court has rejected the group's claim of ownership. It ruled the land belongs to the U.S. government.

To an eye accustomed to looking at this type of thing, the Harris Neck case is miles different than the Bundy's or Hammond's in Oregon, even though they both involve spats and sit-ins with the Federal Government.

The Dellegall and Graham heirs appeared to have the strongest legal claim on the Harris Neck lands (a probated will conveying it), when the US Army paid close to the assessed value for unimproved land in the area after "condemnation" proceedings under Eminent Domain or the War Powers Act when they wouldn't voluntarily sell. It was at this point that the Gullahs conveyed their titles and interests in these lands lands via boilerplate deeds to the US government. From the law's perspective, Thus endeth the reign of the Gullah over the lands in question.

Aside from the 7th District Court's ruling, there's also been a Congressional Hearing on the Harris Neck matter. They can't get around those boilerplate deeds either, or the fact there's nothing on paper alluding to any promises from the Army that the titles would revert and the Gullahs could take possession of what was once theirs. SCOTUS has not taken up the case either, and in the eyes of Congress, the greater good is the NWR.

20/20 says the Gullahs were "penny wise and pound foolish" and should have retained better counsel in 1942 if they didn't want to take the Army's first offer. They could have gotten a fairer price and have been less bitter all these years.

But the US Army in 1942 was very much on the way to being an irresistible force. A lot of people got fucked over in Appalachia too, and in Western drainages in the Depression immediately before the War. "Progress"
Riparian lands were usually the first settled, and most dams in America displaced people who didn't necessarily want to sell their bottomland.


The Bundys, however, now want Congress to turn over all Federal Public Lands to the States, and get back to the Bible Constitution...

In 1979 40 squatters occupied a wild life refuge on federal land. Three days later the authorities had them bundled out of there and gaoled four of them for trespassing. In 2016 an unknown number of squatters occupied a wild life refuge on federal land. The are still there, dismantling a fence, stealing BLM owned cars and availing to themselves to any government facility they feel comes in handy for whatever it is they want to do. Two weeks later they are still there, inviting the press in for briefings. The only action from officials so far was the County Sheriff begging the squatters to go home and arresting the alleged car thief, who is out on bail for a previous offence, when he was found using one of the stolen vehicles to do some shopping at the local supermarket.
