Well, from what I hear, Hoboken, NJ is already filling up with water. The beach towns, like Ocean City (near Atlantic City), Wildwood, and such are all under water. Beach Haven is under about 4 feet of water.

Yeah -- this is getting bad. The rain isn't really coming down hard yet, at least not inland from the shore. But, the surge is so huge, that I think the beach towns are all underwater. I know that some of them easily get washed out in storms. But, this is going to be much worse than anything that ever occurred in my lifetime. I think New Jersey may lose entire towns.
I wonder if anyone is taking pictures in downtown Manhattan. Is Batter Park under water yet? I expect that at this rate, we're going to have a few feet of water in the financial district by the Stock Exchange soon.

Holy moly -- http://gawker.com/5955757/battery-park- ... en-hit-yet
Battery Park esplanade - I think, if i remember correctly, the Statue of Liberty would be off to the left in that picture (that little thing there is it, left center, I think) --
The ocean is climbing the steps at end of Wall Street --
That was 4 hours ago.
FDR Drive is under water -- 2 hours ago --

Still just a light drizzle near downtown DC. The wind is picking up a bit.

The rain and wind are secondary issues. The storm surge is always the most deadly and the most destructive. The wind will take down power lines, and people will lose some shingles and whatnot. The storm surge is going to wipe out homes and businesses along the shore. The way this looks, whole towns are going to be washed away, conceivably.amused wrote:Still just a light drizzle near downtown DC. The wind is picking up a bit.

good luck guys, if you can get out, I'd suggest you get out now. If the storm surge is already that deep and the wind hasn't started, it's going to be ugly and you won't be able to get out very soon now.

I don't see any power lines in this area, so they must all be underground. If we lose power, it will be because of a wider grid issue instead of trees. My car is on the street and I can't tell from looking at the topography whether this area might flood enough to damage it or not. It's insured.
Re: Duck and cover = Perfect Storm a comin'
Normally FEMA recommends that you have an emergency kit that will allow you to survive on your own for three days, but in this case, due to the massive number of people who will be affected, you should expect to be on your own, without food, power, water or transportation for at least two weeks, maybe more. If you're not already ready for that, please GET OUT NOW! Get in your car and head uphill as quickly as you can.amused wrote:I don't see any power lines in this area, so they must all be underground. This is going to be major damage and chaos, with gangs already planning looting sprees by Twitter. FEMA will simply be overwhelmed and it may actually come down to martial law and National Guard troops because of the violence and looting.
If there is ANY way you can get out, go west and plan to stay there for several weeks, I strongly recommend that you do so RIGHT NOW.
Shut the computer down and leave. Don't think about it, just do it.
That's my professional emergency management-trained recommendation, and I'm absolutely serious here.

Buuuut.... timing is everything. I just moved in here four days ago so I could chase work on the marketing side of architecture. There was already some demand for that. With billions of dollars of damage about to happen, I figure my services will be in very high demand come about Friday. No way I'm leaving now!
