The Swish Family Robinson have milked the public teet to the max - they are both councillors, MLAs (Northern Irish Assembly members), Members of the British Parliament, Ministers, and they receive very lucrative salaries for their jobs - they also claim more expenses than any other MPs in the UK - they fucking max out every allowance - their joint income is something like £500,000 and they also employ two of their children which adds another £160,000 in expenses and salaries. They fucking love money - their home is a palace and they have a villa in Florida - and still Iris tries to wangle £5,000 in cash from the 19 year old toy boy she is fucking, while at the same time espousing biblical morality and saying it should be enforced by government, at the same time as claiming homosexuality was an abomination (just after a spate of homophobic attacks in NI, when that community was feeling particulalry vulnerable and needed reassurance from our leaders), and she is on record as saying the following in the British Houses of Parliament:
"There can be no viler act, apart from homosexuality and sodomy, than sexually abusing innocent children"
All the while her husband stood by her.

Now they are using the blanket of mental illness to excuse her from answering any questions (even though she is not so ill as to be able to head off on a skiing holiday soon) - it's fucking despicable, cynical and calculating - they were both totally cornered and they figured that mental illness would be a good get out, the only get out. She wasn't mentally ill a few months ago when she envisaged a long political career ahead - it only happened (interesting how all of the so called attempted suicide stories etc. can't be confirmed) after the BBC confirmed they would be exposing her.

Hell slap it up the bastards - the Robinson's have been a cancer on the political life of Northern Ireland for decades - their cartoon loyalist rhetoric thrived on bigotry and the lowest common denominator - the truly world class manufacturing base in his constituency withered and died without a whimper over thirty years as they fomented division and discord to keep their careers going and their lifestyle is light years beyond anything the vast majority of those they have moralised to and ruled like Raj princelings.

Dev, like Charlou I was wondering a little about the degree of the schadenfreude you were showing... ;)

Given what you've just posted, looks like it was perfectly reasonable!

Dev, I understand the situation, just not the glee people seem to have about it ... I'm happier seeing people actually understand and acknowledge their errors and strive to change as a consequence. Is the delight people take in this woman's downfall due to the fact that she may now learn something and change? That's not the impression I get from reading the comments the media reports generate.

In ordinary circumstances I would have every sympathy with a couple going through such a trauma - 40 years of marriage is not to be sniffed at and it is a very human tragedy; however, the further revelations about financial impropriety on top of sexual impropriety, on top of sanctimonious religious bleating have ensured this is one of the very rare - perhaps only - occasions when all of my sympathy is gone.

Just to give you an idea of how disgustingly poisonous Northern Irish politics is, Jim and Charlou, Iris Robinson still holds all her public offices this morning with the full support of her party the DUP - she is therefore still being paid, will still receive massive severance pay when she leaves at a time of her choosing.

Her Creationist buddy Edwin Poots defended her and her husband the First Minister on the radio this morning with this despicable non-sequiter:

Why is there so much fuss about the Robinson's when Gerry Adams (the DUP's biggest enemy Sinn Fein) should be investigated for not turning his brother in sooner regarding accusations of paedophilia - it is well known that Adams did no such thing because he was supporting his niece (the victim) and left the decision when to report the crime to her. That's the sort of depths we plumb in this part of the world folks.

If the consequence is that they are forced from public office in complete ignomy, that may be a valuable lesson to others in public life...

To you tend to see the depth of the political poison as being inextricably linked to the bitter religious divide in your part of the world?

I think the glee eminates from the fact that she practised hypocrisy on an unimaginable scale - she and her husband have enjoyed the very fine trappings of huge success in the public arena, success built on a very peculiar type of politics mingled with religion.

Also, people like myself (and there are plenty of us) - the rational, reasoned section of the Northern Irish populace have had to put up with cunts like the Robinsons (and their Republican counterparts) for decades, always stalling progress because it didn't suit their agenda or the scum who act as their power base. We have been tarred and embarrassed internationally by their antics (Paisley at the European parliament anyone?), they have whipped up hatred and bigotry (the DUP is festooned with that "cultural" disgrace: Orange Men) and we have had to try and get on with our lives and build our children's future in spite of our horrible political landscape instead of within it.

I don't care if the Robinson's learn. I hope they suffer. I hope they feel pain and hurt on an epic level - it still won't be as much as the hurt they have directly and indirectly caused to this benighted province, whipping its most fanatical and murderous elements in to a frenzy when we cried out for calm.

Fuck them. This is a small moment of delicious joy for those of us who have had to quietly put up with their ranting throughout our lives.
