For a moment I thought this was an April fool. What a load of wankery. (of no specific gender)
Edit: I actually went back to check the date as after posting this I thought this really can't be for real. Fuckin' nora.
Edit2: The poor bastard who got fired for 'disrespecting the community' has kids. That woman should be fucking ...shot (metaphorically of course).

Poor loves“Women in technology need consistant [sic] messaging from birth through retirement they are welcome, competent and valued in the industry,” she explained in a blog post.
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

We should go further than that though. We should be boosting their self-esteem and telling them that they're invaluable to the tech industry in vitro as soon as we find out the sex of the baby.

Re: Donglegate! The unfortunate progeny of Elevatorgate.
This is another time when several incidents are conflated to make a cause celebré out a nobody.
1. The person over-hears something she claims she found offensive.
2. The person takes a photograph of two of the suspected culprits along with a whole host of other people and exposes all of them on her twitter feed and complaining to the organisers.
3. The organisers deal with the situation.
4. The organisers felt that her actions were also in breach of the rules of the convention.
5. Two of the men were fired from their company for being in breach of the rules of the convention (they were there as employees).
5. There was a nasty backlash against her and the companies involved.
6. Her own company fired her.
Now inevitably this is likely to be painted into "Wall of misogyny hits girl who speaks out" Which only pertains to part five. If the breaching of the rules of the convention were a sackable offence to those she exposed, there is no cause for her to complain that her own company fired her for her own breaching of those company rules.
Number 5 is not the issue because it would not have happened if she herself had obeyed the rules and not made a public exhibition of herself and two guys having a quiet frankly "U" rated joke. While I think the anger she has received has in part been vile, I have noticed it coming from many quarters, from women in the Tech industry who consider her a shit stirrer who's actions are actually harmful towards women in that industy, from feminists who think that her casual disregard for the rules as they apply to herself and her subsequent martyr fantasy make her a privileged attention seeker.
I'm not sure there are many people outside of the victim-feminists who would consider her actions themselves useful or beneficial in any way.

This is how the humanist movement ends. Not with a bang, but with a string of absurd 'sexist' 'debacles'.

She's complaining about Defcon?Robert_S wrote:Yep.
It's a travesty. I've heard there are cons where things actually are horrible, like at Defcon where those infamous cards were developed:
http://singlevoice.net/2012/07/12/sexis ... at-defcon/Like the man who drunkenly tried to lick my shoulder tattoo. Like the man who grabbed my hips while I was waiting for a drink at the EFF party. Like the man who tried to get me to show him my tits so he could punch a hole in a card that, when filled, would net him a favor from one of the official security staff (I do not have words for how slimy it is that the official security staff were in charge of what was essentially a competition to get women to show their boobs). Or lastly, the man who, without prompting, interrupted my conversation and asked me if I’d like to come back to his room for a “private pillowfight party.” “You know,” he said. “Just a bunch of girls having a pillowfight…. fun!” When I asked him how many men would be standing around in a circle recording this event, he quickly assured me that “no one would be taking video! I swear!” I’m pretty sure this is the point where my lovely partner Morgan asked him if he thought propositions like his had anything to do with contributing to women not feeling welcome at Defcon. This was a very difficult concept for this poor soul to wrap his head around.
Now, who lost that guy his job? Was it the fault of the woman tweeting the incident, or was it the shitty people at the company the man worked for?
Yet the company that REALLY overreacted isn't getting the blame. The woman is. Another outdated cultural relic, along with being too easily offended.
Let's see...hmmm... Defcon.og
About --- started in 1993 -- "... it was a meant to be a party..."
It's a "hacker convention."
What are the rules of DEF CON?
Physical violence is prohibited. We don't support illegal drug use. Minors should be accompanied by their parent(s) or guardian(s). Please refrain from doing anything that might jeopardize the conference or attendees such as lighting your hair on fire or throwing lit road flares in elevators. DEF CON Goons are there to answer your questions and keep everything moving. Hotel security is there to watch over their property. Each has a different mission, and it is wise to not anger the hotel people. Please be aware that if you engage in illegal activities there is a large contingency of feds that attend DEF CON. Talking about how you are going to bomb the RNC convention in front of an FBI agent is a Career Limiting Move!
DEF CON is a unique experience for each con-goer. If you google around you'll find dozens of write-ups that will give you an idea of what people have experienced at DEF CON. Trust write-ups more than media articles about the con. Some people play capture the flag 24x7, while many people never touch a computer at DEF CON. Some people see every speech they can, while others miss all speeches. Other activities include contests, movie marathons, scavenger hunts, sleep deprivation, lock picking, warez trading, drunken parties, spot the fed contest, the official music events. Because DEF CON is what the attendees make of it, there are more events than even we are aware of. Half the fun is learning what happened at DEF CON after the fact!
http://www.defcon.org/html/links/dc-faq/dc-faq.htmlDo criminals go to DEF CON?
Yes. They also go to high school, college, work in your workplace, and the government. There are also lawyers, law enforcement agents, civil libertarians, cryptographers, and hackers in attendance. Ssshhh. Don't tell anyone.
So, in that context, some drunk "tried" (unsuccessfully, I presume) to lick her tattoo, and guys wanted her to engage in a pillow fight or show her tits.
Fuck off. Go to a different convention. Just because she wants this "hacker" convention to be super-serious doesn't mean they have to change it for her. Don't go. If enough people don't go, then they will change the rules. If enough people go, then that's what those people want to do.

Or grabbed her hips. You forgot that one.
If you can't tell the difference between what the woman is describing at Defcon and a joke between a couple guys about dongles... or an invitation for coffee in an elevator; then you're just as bad as Rebecca and Adria.
You're probably part of the reason they're as successful as they are.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Seriously, before this furore started, I hadn't heard the term "dongle" for many years.

Donegal? It's about 200 km north of me, and I intend to keep it as far away from me as I can.JimC wrote:Very similar to Donegal, you must admit...klr wrote:JimC wrote:I got my dongle stuck in my computer!Less of that filthy, sexist talk here.
