I can't agree with that about boxing. That's not true about the ENTIRE purpose of the sport.
When you're boxing, your purpose is to knock out your opponent, and NOT to get hit yourself. And his purpose is the same. And the referee has a purpose of stopping it, before one gets too badly hurt.
So it's not the entire purpose at all. But it is one purpose, I have to admit that.
The thing is though, if you want to ban people from harming themselves by taking up boxing, you can hardly allow smoking or drinking.
I don't think it's valid to make a distinction just because of the purpose of knocking your opponent out.
The real purpose of boxers is to enjoy the sport that they love. Just like I enjoy the cigars that I love to smoke.
The harm that comes with it in both cases, is a risk we knowingly agree to take.
Obviously, in both cases, children should be protected, because they're not old enough to weigh up the odds and decide for themselves.
