I was actually wondering why the press has Hollande as a shoo in when adding up the "left" and the "right" votes comes up with numbers about equal, but then I got lazy and asked it over at ratskep.

It's amazing how far left the "far right" is, sometimes.

Next round is may 6.

My guess is hollande wins... or maybe my hope since I'd really like to be rid of the other guy. Given how hated sharkshyt is, there should be a landslide... but given how he has managed to divide the opposition to remain in the second round, I suspect that the victory will not be as massive as one would wish... plus, hollande may still manage something incredibly stupid, and lose.

I'm hoping for a Hollande win too.

He's a weak leader, and with no end in sight from the economic down turn combined with his socialist and immigration policies he'll end up at least as unpopular as Sarkozy. That might well open the door for Marine Le Pen in another five years.

These are bad times, and no one elected now is going to be popular four or five years from now.

Who would she invade?
The most extreme thing she could do is resettle the Blacks / Muslims back to North Africa. She might also force some non-French EU citizens to voluntarily emigrate if their welfare benefits are lowered. Was France so bad in the 60's and 70's when it was just full of French?

Possibly Germany, or algeria... Remember, a LARGE, and underestimmated support of her party, is made up of the "blackfeet", the French people who were forced to leave algeria after it took its independence (because the 'traitor' de gaulle reneged on his promises and decided to cut his loss, which you can agree with or not depending on how much you agree that keeping Algeria as a set of French departments would essentially have demanded a total elimination of its arab population... with luck, we could have managed the Kabyles by just making them full citizens)... Those are some of the most anti immigration, and especially anti maghrebin groups in the country, and are the reason her party is so strong in the Southeast.

if she gets anywhere near power, they'll remind her that she owes them, and that there's a large bit of France under enemy feet.

Modern warfare isn't the same as during the days of The British Empire and earlier.

When you say war in Western Europe who's shooting who?
I would have thought Europe, at least Western Europe, would generally stand pretty united. Except perhaps New South Germany (Greece).

What would she gain out of invading Germany?

Algeria, possibly, though it strikes me that would make the labor dislocation problems even worse, as it would imply freer movement between France and Algeria. An invasion of Algeria is not such a big deal, though - it's not like France hasn't recently attacked Libya.

Any thoughts on the prospects of political horse trading? It sounds like Le Pen is offering to support Sarkozy in exchange for an end to boycotts on her party.
"In a run-off between the National Front and a Socialist, would the UMP and the president prefer to have one of my deputies or a Socialist elected?" Le Pen asked. "I still don't have an answer to that question. I'm waiting," she said, when asked who she might back. "How I express myself will depend on the response."
