A legend in his own lunchtime I think. Everybody's a legend these days.
He's sold like 30 or 40 million records. In the 1970s he was hugely popular with a string of multi-platinum albums. He was also with the group Damn Yankees, which had some members of Styx in it too, I think.

I don't like his music much. But, he was popular, and he used to play football stadiums packed with 75,000 fans at a clip.
Must be an American thing. I loved the Allman Brothers, Eagles, The Band, quite liked Lynard Skinnard and many others, but never heard of Nugent.
Maybe he just didn't get played over here. I haven't heard of Damn Yankees or Styx either.
We have lots of stuff over here that doesn't migrate over there.

Most of us can't figure out why Yerpeeins like what they like. The French loved Jerry Lewis and the Germans loved David Hasselhoff. Where does that come from?

I like Eric Cartman's cover of Come Sail Away.

Seems to be fairly predictable unremarkable rock and roll, judging from the two examples.
Other US bands that were played a lot were Credence Clearwater revival, Alice Cooper, the beach boys, and acts like Simon and Garfunkle.

But no American band has ever come anywhere near the Allman Brothers for me.

As for American artists, I'd recommend Springsteen, Zappa, Elvis, The Pixies, The Ramones, Grateful Dead, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Iggy Pop, Guns N Roses, Van Halen, Metallica, and Aerosmith, in addition to the ones you mentioned.

I loved his stuff when I was younger, but I prefer my music shorn of politics. Apparently, Nugent nowadays has a habit of launching into political rants at his concerts, which means I won't be plunking down my ducats to see him, I don't think. He and Sinead O'Connor and Neil Young can all unplug their gear and I won't complain.

Zilla, Styx? Really? I put up with Geddy because, well, they are Rush and he plays bass.

For some strange reason, I think that the US has always excelled at producing individual artists, and the UK has produced great bands.
There's always the exceptions, but I still think that applies as a rough rule. I can't imagine why that would be, but for a place six times smaller, the UK, I think, actually produced more great bands than the US.

But the opposite applies to great individual artists, the US churned them out in bulk.

I love Rush, but the older I get, the more Ged's vocals grate on the ears. Alex was a formative influence on my guitar playing, though.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Am I the only one who thinks Elvis was complete shite? :ask:

I've heard of Ted Nugent somewhere before. On a rap song I think. Not sure. I didn't hear about him in relation to music anyway.

Elvis before the Army did some decent stuff, imo. Basic Training ruined him
