what I"m babbling about is how small and naive their minds are to think they're so much better than "city" folks, where there's more variety of people and variety of situations to deal with. Small towns, small minds.

I'm not so sure anybody is making a comparison like that. It's certainly statistically - factually - empirically true that there is less crime in small towns, generally speaking, than big cities. It is only rational to be "surprised" at a dramatic criminal event when you don't ever see similar events in one's town. That is not to say that any person is better or worse than another. If anything, you're the one denigrating other people by saying "small towns, small minds," as if they're worse than the people in the big city. You accuse small town people of bigotry on the front end, but then you end by being bigoted against small town people.

Exactly.

I never claimed I was perfect and I have many prejudices myself.

Well, so you're generalizing that someone who is surprised that a horrific crime would occur in an otherwise quiet and peaceful community -- they must be saying they are "better" than the city folk - that bothers you. Then you go and say that smaller community folks have smaller minds than city people (clearly implying superiority on the part of the city people).

And, now you say that sure, that is the case, and you have many prejudices. Great. Then where do you get the nerve to criticize small town people for allegedly having an almost identical kind of prejudice as you, yourself have?

Christ on a bicycle. I would think you would grant the country people similar latitude, as they may not claim to be wholly free from prejudice themselves. (of course, we're assuming a lot regarding just a generalized subgroup of people there, which is the definition of stereotyping).

Well, you're right... depending on how large a small town is, I've known small town people to call some folk "that family from there", when it was the grandfather that had settled from a place like 100 miles away, if that far.
(well, of course, the place is an island... not one that's really isolated from the rest of the world though, there are several shuttle services from at least 3 mainland locations)

:hehe: :hehe: :hehe:

hey, I traveled all throughout USA (before I married and had kids) small towns, big cities, out West Indian reservations, Alaska towns where you can only get by "air taxi"..lived in "Midtown Manhattan"..........there's definitely a difference. It was a great experience. I even met a sheriff that arrested me in a small town in Montana, only to find out he had the same "LAST" name as me and come to find out we're related!!!
