Raise the Retirement Age to 67?

Paradoxically I was forced to retire, or rather qualified under the terms of voluntary redundancy at the age of 60. The deal was too good not to take but I would much rather have gone on until 65 or even a bit later if I was still up to it.

Today is actually exactly one year to the day since I finished work. It has taken the best part of the year to get used to it. I know it sounds attractive and it is in many respects but it has a big downside, if like me your work felt like it was a vocation.

I know what you mean. I worry that, after I retire, I may accost perfect strangers in the street, begging hem to let me teach them how to solve quadratic equations.

I posted in jest, but with some reality behind it. As much as I get exhausted by the job, I still enjoy getting my lads to be able to solve problems and expand their knowledge - it's a buzz...

I am probably more fortunate than you in one sense - there is a shortage of senior maths and physics teachers here, so I can choose my own time to go. Maybe you can find some area where a part-time contribution by an experienced chap would be welcome/

Nah - I would have grabbed the chance six months in. Now I'm getting into it I don't know how I would find the time to actually go to 'work'!

It actually makes sense to raise the retirement age.

Here in New Zealand, we just passed the 100 year anniversary of the first universal pension. Kicked in at 65. However, at the time, the average life span was 70. So the government, on average, paid a pension for 5 years. Today, the average longevity is 80, so the government is paying for 15 years. Three times as long. This is a heavy burden on the taxpayer.

Not only that, but average health is better. Today, the average 70 year old is not decrepit, but is fit and healthy, and able to work. So why not extend the time before you can become a vampire, sucking on the taxpayer's jugular?

This is the generally agreed logic, but before you start accusing us oldies of being vampires you need to differentiate between the state pension and an occupational one. The pension I get is paid for by me. I have put almost a third of my salary aside since 1976 into a pension fund. That fund belongs to the people who have built it up through their own endeavours.

I won't qualify for the state pension until I'm 65 which is the current etirment age, which I agree should be raised gradually if people's health continues to improve as it has.

There is a counter argument of course. It is probably more expensive econimically for young people to be out of work than older people to be retired. Perhaps we should all retire at 60 and make room for them in the jobs market!

The sperm donor was forced to take early retirement at 62 because he was off work too due to illness. There are days lately when I think the same thing would have happened to me if I actually had a job.

I think the retirement age should be set at 100 yrs. If you make it that far, you should be allowed to be put on heroin and mellow out to your last exit.
