I've never met one person in everyday life that I know has read it. I haven't. To be embarrassingly honest I've never been interested enough to find out what the whole big deal is about her or her books. It's never seemed interesting or relevant...

Actually, it was never realized. the Soviets claimed they were on their way to it, but never went beyond baby steps, and hit the wall of economic realities before they ever tried implementing a real change of paradigm.

It's a good book. It also contains an interesting personal account of how Shermer became a sceptic (from being quite the opposite).

I've never read Atlas Shrugged. However I have read Telemachus Sneezed, a parody by Wilson and Shea in the Illuminatus trilogy. Their take on it was highly amusing, especially considering that Wilson, to me at least, reads like a libertarian (with a small l).

Still there is a massive difference between Marx and Rand, one was writing an economic political philosophy which you may or may not agree with, the other was writing a sci-fi rant railing against collectivism possibly as a reaction to what happened in Russia. They do have something in common, both were Jewish.
