C'mon Red, with the sample available, it's not like it were hard to understand his views at most subjects, and most easily about anything with ties to the matter politick.

Fair enough i do find it rather insulting however as marx had a hopeful vision for the future whereas rand had a dystopian idea of right-wing anarchy.Svartalf wrote:C'mon Red, with the sample available, it's not like it were hard to understand his views at most subjects, and most easily about anything with ties to the matter politick.

and you're quite right... now, try and make those small-state survivalist morons understand that what they want is dystopic...redunderthebed wrote:Fair enough i do find it rather insulting however as marx had a hopeful vision for the future whereas rand had a dystopian idea of right-wing anarchy.Svartalf wrote:C'mon Red, with the sample available, it's not like it were hard to understand his views at most subjects, and most easily about anything with ties to the matter politick.

Actually, it was never realized. the Soviets claimed they were on their way to it, but never went beyond baby steps, and hit the wall of economic realities before they ever tried implementing a real change of paradigm.Animavore wrote:Shame his vision, when realised, was completely hopelessredunderthebed wrote:Fair enough i do find it rather insulting however as marx had a hopeful vision for the future whereas rand had a dystopian idea of right-wing anarchy.Svartalf wrote:C'mon Red, with the sample available, it's not like it were hard to understand his views at most subjects, and most easily about anything with ties to the matter politick.

It's a good book. It also contains an interesting personal account of how Shermer became a sceptic (from being quite the opposite).Svartalf wrote:You make me want to read that.Pappa wrote:Btw.... Micheal Shermer included a chapter on Ayn Rand as a cult in his book "Why People Believe Weird Things".

Re: Ayn Rand: The Philosophy of the Psychopath
I've never read Atlas Shrugged. However I have read Telemachus Sneezed, a parody by Wilson and Shea in the Illuminatus trilogy. Their take on it was highly amusing, especially considering that Wilson, to me at least, reads like a libertarian (with a small l).
Still there is a massive difference between Marx and Rand, one was writing an economic political philosophy which you may or may not agree with, the other was writing a sci-fi rant railing against collectivism possibly as a reaction to what happened in Russia. They do have something in common, both were Jewish.

Thirded. Shermer's neither the most gifted speaker nor writer, but the subject matter is interesting and it's worth a read.Clinton Huxley wrote:Aye, 'tis a good read.Pappa wrote:It's a good book. ever lived, and if some lived, none ever came close to applying a Kommunist system politically.Animavore wrote:No true CommieSvartalf wrote:Actually, it was never realized. the Soviets claimed they were on their way to it, but never went beyond baby steps, and hit the wall of economic realities before they ever tried implementing a real change of paradigm.Animavore wrote:Shame his vision, when realised, was completely hopelessredunderthebed wrote:Fair enough i do find it rather insulting however as marx had a hopeful vision for the future whereas rand had a dystopian idea of right-wing anarchy.Svartalf wrote:C'mon Red, with the sample available, it's not like it were hard to understand his views at most subjects, and most easily about anything with ties to the matter politick.
I must add that I say that from the perspective of one who has the gravest doubts about Marx's visions, as they can also be regarded as a bunch of self hating destruction fantasies... a shame poor Karl never could grace Dr Freud's couch.

Whenever I see the name Ayn Rand, I think it's a typo.
