This may be the case in 'safe and secure' times but the NSDP in Germany were far from dumb.

Care to parse that out for me. It doesn't scan as it is.

Prior to the collapse of the Weimer republic things were quite liberal. After the hyper-nflation Germany moved to the extreme right and the so did the intelligensia.

Okay, but I'd limit that to certain operators in the party, not the NDSAP as a whole. Most of them, especially early on, were thugs.
