Regional variations of collapse and re-emergence(weather permitting) a protacted nuclear winter might pose existential problems for the species as a whole? If a area can contain a collapsed population by geographic & cultural boundaries combined with some kind of agricultural capacity, or invade areas closeby that are not protected...that could yield agricultural capacity...that'll be the chief resource to compete for. There will be countless variations on the theme. Lot's of local conflicts that'll reduce the population still further. The South Eastern area of England will find it easier to invade & violently depoplulate parts of France or Portugal rather than trying anything on with the North of England, to obtain farmland. Etc...across the globe. :smoke:

Does that mean Yorkshire can finally get it's revenge and kill off 75% of the French ?

Yeah. Like the break-up of Yugoslavia writ large. Lot's of scores to settle on this world when things get local and states no longer control their peoples. :smoke:

Maybe, but definitely not in my lifetime Lozzer. If it's any consolation I plan on dying in about 50 more years.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

The population decline will be similar(and potentialy worse for a myriad of reasons) but the cultural and socio-technological loss will be much greater in relative terms. It will only take a generation for most of the sophisticated knowledge humans currently rely on to become inaccessible remote knowledge of the ancients. The lack of writing implements, the lack of paper and the struggle to survive in a harsh unforgiving environment. Reading and writing will be the preserve ofthe religious elites as in the middle ages and the scribe will become a preserve of kings? That's possible....don't even think about the printing press for the first hundred years, by which time climate change will be impacting in a big way.

Not for me. I've got all sorts of reference material that isn't on a hard drive. I even have a generic 1954-65 Chilton's Auto Repair manual so I can fix all those non-computerized cars.

I'm going to be a fucking GOD when the shit hits the fan.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Great point. Overall, 40-50% of the population of Europe and the Middle East and North Africa; in the colder North, some places as low as 20%; in the warmer South, as high as 80%. Keep in mind this happened in two to five years.

There are too many people now. No one wants to be on the wrong side of th lottery with this but some must. Things will be particularly bad in places like California where the eco-balance is way out of natural wack, sustaining a massive over-population and maintained by massive inputs of surplus food/energy from elsewhere? :coffee:

Doesn't California export a lot of produce? :dunno:

Yes, but it is all virtual hydro-ponics. Once the critical fertilisers and loss of access to cheap fuel kicks in. The change to expensive fuel will not be gradual, it will be a shock stressor on a already over optimised system of agriculture. :bored:
