How to Prepare for a Hurricane in the U.S. Northeast
Here are some tips from the Federal Emergency Management Administration and the City of New York: make sure drains and gutters are clear, put together a disaster supply kit (batteries and water are key) and secure loose objects likely to fly around in heavy wind

Middletown, Delaware - almost exactly centered between Wilmington and Dover.
The up side of all this is that after six+ years of living in this house, it inspired us to finally get off our asses and make room to squeeze one little car into a big 2-car garage. Of course, that mostly means all the junk out there is now piled head-high on one side, but hey, it's a start.

You have any threatening trees there? If so, that's the biggest danger for you if you're indoors.
Also, if you get run out of your house by damage, where will everybody meet? I would suggest you trade a deal with a neighbor, "come over here if you get outed, and we come over there if we get hit." Make those kind of arrangements NOW.

None of the trees nearby are very big - all the old growth in the area was cleared to build our neighborhood and the new trees that have been planted since are still fairly small.Gawdzilla wrote:You have any threatening trees there? If so, that's the biggest danger for you if you're indoors.

The Red Cross is setting up shop at the high school a mile from here and there are multiple roads that will get us there, so worst case we can probably reach that. I'm really not so worried about us getting through this - we're taking reasonable precautions, but I don't think the danger of injury/etc is too severe. What I'm more concerned about, because I see it as a lot more likely, is wind and/or water damage to the house.
... and in a perverse sort of way, I'm looking forward to the storm. It's the most interesting thing to happen in Delaware in a while.

A mile is too damn far in a hurricane, mate. Say you have a broken leg and the roads are blocked. Who carries you a mile? And what if there are downed power lines between you and the shelter? Just saying that you should have more than one option. Even if you don't talk to the neighbors first, tell everybody which house is the rally point.

Someone (of the religious fucktard variety) commented on another site that this was all a sign of the End Times, and that we all should heed the warning because God holds the world in His hands. My response: "Oh, you mean like Lennie's mouse? Well I know he loves it so, but could you tell your mentally deficient god to maybe stop squeezing so hard?"
Anyway, yes, we're in for a bit of a kerfuffle Sunday. I was notified by the landlord that the water is being shut off to prevent an unpleasant back-up in the pipes.

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

Mrs WB should be in NY city by now from Nantucket. If anybody sees her drifting in the wind would you kindly pull her into safety...

On Fridays we usually order from a burrito place at work. Since I left early today, I don't have to worry so much about unpleasant back-ups this weekend.tattuchu wrote: Anyway, yes, we're in for a bit of a kerfuffle Sunday.
