In fact, the 1951 report of the Commission on Subversive Activities to the Legislature of the Territory of Hawaii identified him as a CPUSA member. Yes, the US is probably right compared to some of the world, and thankfully so. It would be a sad state of affairs if the US was to the left of China an it's 1.5 billion people. The US is gratefully to the right of Venezuela, Cuba, Mongolia, North Korea, and various other Leftist and Stalinist nations.

But, most of the Muslim world is far right of the US, given their theocratic and fascist governments. Africa is a mix - generally either far to the right, or far to the left of the US.

Europe tends to be bit left of the US - with more socialist leanings in their economies.

The US fits largely in the middle. Naturally, your reference to to "most of the world" probably really meant "Europe" and not really most of the world. Yes, we're to the right of Europe, a bit. Pushing for nationalized healthcare, government control of 1/2 the US auto industry, efforts to move the US toward nationalizing the banking industry -- he toyed with ideas that would essentially nationalize the oil industry -- Just now in January, 2010, the Obama Administration proposed nationalizing the student loan industry.

I agree, what they got is a clusterfuck. But, what they wanted, and what the President's 'druthers were is single payer government run health care. Socialized medicine. They couldn't get that because of popular opposition, so they tried their darndest to get what they could.
