I mean...what did you mean by this:
maiforpeace wrote:Wouldn't that be something if he meant he would be using all our military spending for the environment. That's a war I can get behind.

That's a war you would lose. China would take over the world and turn it into an orange dust cloud.
I agree with maiforpeace, it appears you do not, because you think somehow if military spending was cut China would take over the world. Just not sure what you're talking about.
Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

Related to Asian Dust, I think. We get that shit every year, for months on end.

Don't try to pretend as if this was a serious discussion and my unserious responses were meant to be serious. It makes you look desperate. Like the Chicoms are becoming with their immense, growing population and their immense, growing orange dust clouds.

desperate for what? This thread is as "serious" as any other internet/forum thread. Bunch of wankers on keyboards. Before you say anything, yes, myself included.

If you don't mind I will exclude myself from your gross generalisation. I *never* wank on my keyboard! :coffee:

Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann and Howard Fineman react to President Obama's Oval Office Address on the oil spill. Here are the highlights of what the trio said:

Olbermann: "It was a great speech if you were on another planet for the last 57 days."

Matthews compared Obama to Carter.

Olbermann: "Nothing specific at all was said."

Matthews: "No direction."

Howard Fineman: "He wasn't specific enough."

Olbermann: "I don't think he aimed low, I don't think he aimed at all. It's startling."

Howard Fineman: Obama should be acting like a "commander-in-chief."

Matthews: Ludicrous that he keeps saying [Secretary of Energy] Chu has a Nobel prize. "I'll barf if he does it one more time."

Matthews: "A lot of meritocracy, a lot of blue ribbon talk."

Matthews: "I don't sense executive command."

I guess when the thrill stops running up and down one's leg, and one gets past how "dreamy" he is, Obama just ain't "all that."

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. I thought his speech was very good.
:hmph:

Exactly what specifics about the future direction of US energy were you hoping for? He mentioned the bill that passed the house; maybe that'll help push it through the senate.

The thrill up Matthews leg has become the chill up his spine. But there is something vaguely admirable about his turn on Obama. Maybe. Unless he's just doing it for ratings. How many political commentators would turn on a politiker the commentator has previously fawned and nearly fainted over?

That said, I'm not turning on Obama yet. I never was a huckleberry for the Water Walker image to begin with. He can't walk on the ocean and suck up all the oil. He can't reach down a mile and tie a knot in the pipe.

Another thought, what the hell does any of these Olberman and Mathews comments have to do with the office of the President and it's role in putting a cap on the well and cleaning up the mess?

I didn't listen to the speech because I don't give a damn about words. If it's action that's needed, let's have a critique of the actions or lack thereof and not of the speech Obama has to make because that comes with being POTUS.

Well said. Those conservatives who've been calling this "the Obamaspill" or "Obama's Katrina" are just reaching for any excuse to slander him. I think he's done as well as can be expected given the circumstances.

Of course, if I were President I would've detonated a small nuclear warhead under the ocean floor during the first week. Would've sealed the leak just fine. But that's just me.

Right, that's why the agencies involved just ran around like chickens with their heads cut off, and ceded all authority to BP for the first month.

I'm impressed with Matthews and Olbermann here - despite their partisanship, they are able to finally throw some merited criticism toward Obama. Most of his supporters won't do that.

No, but he can play more golf than his predecessor, take longer to show up at the site of the disaster, and spend more time fiddling while the disaster worsened, and get far less criticism. Bush, of course, was criticized for not landing in Louisiana because he didn't want to interfere with the efforts there, and Obama was lauded for not heading down there, for the reason that he didn't want to interfere with the efforts there. Bush, of course, was lambasted for "not doing enough" and Obama is roundly given the benefit of the doubt for not being "able" to do anything about it.

Seeing the above criticisms from Matthews and Olbermann is quite refreshing, I must say.

Frankly, I can't understand how anyone can enjoy listening to this guy's speeches. The cadence is so flippin' annoying. It's like two words - pause -- three words - pause -- four words - pause -- two words - pause -- three words - pause - four words -- pause......

We're not -
Going to get
The hole plugged up
Until we
Kick BP's ass
And, they pay up
We'll get
All the fishermen
Back to work ASAP

Then there's a refrain, I think. It's like sing-song hypnotic rhythm he's trying to get going.....

I don't think so. The president has been getting lambasted for some time now for appearing disconnected. He should have learned from Bush's mistake with hurricane Katrina.

Although it is rather funny how many of the people who are demanding government assistance for this oil spill were also the same ones who wanted big government out of their lives. These same people were also part of the "drill baby drill" crowd.

In short, the USA needs to become a dictatorship to flush out the tyranny of the fat Americans.
