Totally, pushing chretinity over other religions reeks of establishment, which is strictly against the constitutionJimC wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2024 2:12 amhttps://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-06-20/ ... /104000880
Unconstitutional?Louisiana has become the first US state to require the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom, in the latest move by new Republican Governor Jeff Landry.
The legislation requires a poster-sized display of the Ten Commandments in "large, easily readable font" in all public classrooms, from kindergarten to state-funded universities.
The posters must be in place in classrooms by the start of next year.
They will each be paired with a four-paragraph "context statement" describing how the Ten Commandments "were a prominent part of American public education for almost three centuries".

That line, "congress shall not establish a religion" - perhaps it only applies to decisions by the national government, not individual states?

Re: American Politics from 2019 on
That's how religion pushers would interpret it, estblishment as a state right... except states work like the federal state with a congress, and if congress can't establish a religion, that actually works at every level, from local/township to the Capitol in DC. Basically, establishment is by nature a restriction on the reasonable use of freedom of speech, ergo illegal. there are reasons why Massachusetts is no longer a puritan dominion, or why mormonism is not officially entrenched into the laws and governance of Utah.

That was the initial significance of the Bill of Rights, and in fact a number of states early on had established religion. All Protestant of course. The Bill of Rights has piecemeal been held applicable to the states via the due process clause of the 14th Amendment--the last state with an established religion was Massachusetts, which supported Congregationalism up till 1883.

So, it seems that Louisiana will not be able to make that argument, that they can do what the national congress cannot. Good.

US is getting way too close to mob rule instead of rule of law. Go Biden.

Biden has overseen the last political cycle at a time when the US has, in your own words, 'moved closer to mob rule instead of rule of law'. What actual difference would another four years of Biden make?macdoc wrote:US is getting way too close to mob rule instead of rule of law. Go Biden.

A dead/retired justice or two in that time would go a long way.
Imagine that. I guess it's only coincidental that you'd already be the perfect citizen in the ideal world you're selling.

The Tea Party became the Birthers, Qanonners and ultimately Trump's MAGAs. The alienating political, economic and social conditions that led to Trump won't magically disappear when he's dead and buried. Trump is just the noisy gargoyle currently at the top of the totem pole, he's not the one holding it up - he's just riding the wave. Someone else will take that perch when he's gone. Biden is offering continuity - which means nothing is going to change for ordinary Americans.
