Senior politicians, a former cabinet secretary and an ex-head of the home civil service have called for a top-level inquiry into how Boris Johnson’s closest aide, Dominic Cummings, was able to sack an adviser to Sajid Javid, the chancellor of the exchequer, without Javid’s knowledge and then order an armed police officer to escort her out of Downing Street in front of staff.

A former senior Metropolitan police officer, former Chief Superintendent Dal Babu, also said the episode should be subject to urgent twin investigations by the cabinet secretary, Mark Sedwill, and Scotland Yard.

The demands for inquiries into the sacking last Thursday of Sonia Khan, the 27-year-old Treasury special adviser, came amid heightened tension at Westminster over Johnson’s decision to suspend parliament for five weeks.

The suspension, planned by Cummings for several weeks, was partly designed to limit the time MPs will have to block a no-deal Brexit.

Saturday’s demonstrations against the shutting down of parliament featured protesters across the country chanting “stop the coup” and “save our democracy”.

Cummings is understood to have concluded that Khan had been dishonest about her recent contacts with her ex-boss, the anti-no deal former chancellor Philip Hammond, and one of his ex-aides – accusations that Khan strongly denies...

A portrait of Michael Gove so large it can “be seen from space” has been drawn on the sand on the North Yorkshire coast to condemn his stance on Brexit.

The anti-Brexit campaign group Led By Donkeys travelled to Redcar to install the drawing measuring 7,500 sq metres, which features a quote from the cabinet minister in which he said the UK “didn’t vote to leave without a deal” in the 2016 EU referendum.

Since writing that in March in a Daily Mail article, the minister, who is in charge of no-deal planning, has backed Boris Johnson’s decision to prorogue parliament...

He'll do it to stop his government being limited by anything passed in Parliament to stop a no-deal Brexit. If he calls an election then Parliamentary business is stopped 25 days before the ballot. Along with the prorogation this could keep MPs out of the legislative chamber and ministers away from committees until B-day is over and done with - and the Duncan Smiths and Rees-Moggs can put all the lovely money they'll get from consulting with firms on trade deals in their safe and secure off-shore tax havens.

peculation is mounting that Boris Johnson could call a snap general election if backbench rebels succeed in passing a bill to delay Brexit, with a Downing Street source saying the issue would be treated as “an expression of confidence” in the government.

Johnson’s cabinet ministers are being summoned for an emergency cabinet meeting on Monday afternoon, before the prime minister addresses Conservative MPs at a No 10 drinks reception.

Senior sources among the cross-party group of rebels say they believe Johnson could seek a snap general election as early as Wednesday, asking for the two-thirds majority needed in the Commons under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act.

he sources suggested the vote would come with a commitment that polling day would be before 31 October, though the date would ultimately be in the control of the government.

The Downing Street source confirmed Johnson would see cabinet ministers before the MPs’ reception, saying they would “discuss the government’s response to MPs seeking to take control of legislative agenda away from the government and handing it to the opposition and Corbyn without the consent of the people”.

The source added: “The view is that tomorrow’s possible vote is an expression of confidence in the government’s negotiating position to secure a deal and will be treated as such.”

It is understood that a general election is unlikely to be announced immediately, but the cabinet will discuss a number of possible strategies after the upcoming votes in parliament...

I think a short note from the EU stating that in the event of an election, the Brexit date will be delayed until a new government is formed. Article 50 suspended until the Poms have made up their minds.

Johnson has just lost his Parliamentary majority as Tory MP Phillip Lee crosses the floor to join the Lib Dems. The Tory whips have been threatening potential rebels with withdrawal of the whip and deselection in order to secure a government majority that would resist any no-deal legislation. Those threats are redundant now, but some Labour MPs may still vote with the government to achieve a Brexit at any cost.
