The Coronavirus Thread
Re: The Coronavirus Thread
In Germany and I guess the rest of the civilized world, as an employee, you when get your normal salary when you have to stay home because you were in contact with an infected person
Re: The Coronavirus Thread
In some of the civilized world, there are jobs which cannot be abandoned, no matter how sick. I see more of them falling to one individual here than most will.
Also, many working people don't have this sort of employment insurance in Canada. We have a fairly robust 'bottom' safety net, but that'll only keep you from starving. It won't get someone to check your nets, or prevent you having to sell off vehicles in order to qualify for those safety nets.
However bad the virus is, I think the damage done will be, lots of times, undocumented. Like when someone sells their gear to keep the rest of their gear working. (such is the case for some commercial fisherman when they fall on hard times)

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Apart from ethical considerations, countries that make it financially difficult to self-quarantine, or get medical attention because of the possibility of the virus, are potentially encouraging the spread - people would have a strong disincentive to doing the right thing...

It's weird to see how politicized the virus is.
At least they get caught being stupid more often.
My government has good info about it. If yours doesn't, you can use mine. Don't listen to assholes with political motivations. It's too easy to draw someone's eye off the ball.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Australia is considering the actions that may be needed if it really takes off here. It would include stopping public gatherings of all kinds, such as sporting events. It would probably be unlikely that mass climate change protests would be allowed, either, which I would regret, but accept for safety reasons...

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
This is from an article from ABC news about how crippling medical costs affect Americans:
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-03/ ... y/12015198
The article is not directly about coronavirus, but it gets a mention in a way which supports an earlier post of mine:
The US is not a civilised country. End of story.

The article is not directly about coronavirus, but it gets a mention in a way which supports an earlier post of mine:
As has been said, civilised communities take the financial burden of coronavirus treatment from individuals, which is both ethical and sensible in terms of reducing the potential for a pandemic...Right now, as authorities work to prevent the spread of the deadly coronavirus around the United States, there are concerns some uninsured people with mild cases may not seek treatment, due to the potential cost.
The Miami Herald reported that one man who developed symptoms after returning from China in January could now owe thousands, after getting tested for coronavirus in hospital and being diagnosed with just the flu.
The US is not a civilised country. End of story.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Apparently people are being charged for their coronavirus tests in America. Apparently it's many thousands of dollars. I suspect the US is going to be smashed by this virus due to its backward approach to healthcare and paid sick leave.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
If this becomes a public health disaster there, in contrast with much less damage in countries with civilised health care, perhaps it will be a wake up call, and change will happen...pErvinalia wrote: ↑Mon Mar 02, 2020 10:49 pmApparently people are being charged for their coronavirus tests in America. Re: The Coronavirus Thread
How are small business owners supported, say, when they can't go service customers homes because they are exhibiting symptoms?
In Canada, the independent plumbers/carpenters/commercial fishers don't feel very supported. I think mostly they do what they have to do.

Most Republicans would rather die than risk having their tax dollars help "moochers" and "welfare queens" aka black and brown people.
https://www.dyingofwhiteness.com/

With the rise of the Tea Party and the election of Donald Trump, many middle- and lower-income white Americans threw their support behind conservative politicians who pledged to make life great again for people like them. But as Dying of Whiteness shows, the right-wing policies that resulted from this white backlash put these voters’ very health at risk—and in the end, threaten everyone’s well-being.
Physician and sociologist Jonathan M. Metzl travels across America’s heartland seeking to better understand the politics of racial resentment and its impact on public health. Interviewing a range of Americans, he uncovers how racial anxieties led to the repeal of gun control laws in Missouri, stymied the Affordable Care Act in Tennessee, and fueled massive cuts to schools and social services in Kansas. Although such measures promised to restore greatness to white America, Metzl’s systematic analysis of health data dramatically reveals they did just the opposite: these policies made life sicker, harder, and shorter in the very populations they purported to aid. Thus, white gun suicides soared, life expectancies fell, and school dropout rates rose.
Powerful, searing, and sobering, Dying of Whiteness ultimately demonstrates just how much white America would benefit by emphasizing cooperation, rather than by chasing false promises of supremacy.

If this turns out to be an escaped bio-weapon, what should our response be? Nuke the fuckers from orbit?
