Barack Obama wins the Nobel Peace prize
Re: Barack Obama wins the Nobel Peace prize
If a student does, sure. but if it's school or teacher sanctioned? No way. That's tax payer funded, and nobody should be forced to pay to have their children brainwashed with messages they don't agree with.

No more brainwashing than anything else you'll get in school. School is about teaching people things. Like "current events". And where do we get the idea that the children don't agree with the message in the song, please?andrewclunn wrote:If a student does, sure. but if it's school or teacher sanctioned? No way. Re: Barack Obama wins the Nobel Peace prize
Current events? 2nd graders don't need to be learning about current events in class. That's BS and you know it. And 2nd graders can't understand all the things being sung there. Are you really going to defend this? Come on, you have more integrity than that and I know it.

You're right, they should be ignorant of the world at large until "somebody" decides they're ready.andrewclunn wrote:Current events? 2nd graders don't need to be learning about current events in class. And you'll note that the lyrics were sent home to the parents. So they didn't have a problem with them. Do you have more rights to the kids education than they do?
Re: Barack Obama wins the Nobel Peace prize
Okay, read the article. The school claims that the parents were sent the lyrics but the interviewed parent says that they weren't. And sure kids should learn about the world, but this isn't an education come on. And as for who gets to decide what kids are taught, parents do, which is why it's such an important point that the parents weren't notified. I mean your argument is so hollow that I could replace singing this song with any media or activity and claim that the kids are going to be exposed to it sooner than later, so why not now. I think you may have just made a wonderful argument for why kids should be exposed to the 'studies' of the Creation Institute. After all, they'll be exposed to creationism eventually, so why not "teach the controversy" when they're young?

Re: Barack Obama wins the Nobel Peace prize
How many black presidents have other white-majority countries had?
The U.S. President is black.
A black man is President of the U.S.
Our country's President is black.
The President is also Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of America, and he's a black man.
And he's only 1/2 black.
I was born in Mississippi in 1962. My uncle owned a grocery store and as a teenager, I worked there during summer vactions. Black people and Choctaws could not enter the store (my uncle was 1/2 Choctaw, but that was a family secret). They had to go to the back door, knock politely until someone got around to opening the door, place an order either verbally or in writing, pay in advance, and wait at the door until they got around to filling the order.
I have gone to school and later worked in places that had 'Whites Only' toilets and water fountains.
In middle school, a black classmate of mine who was 'developmentally disabled', was walking home through a corn field one night and unwittingly passed by a white 'juke joint'. He was stripped, beaten, then hanged. The sheriff's office didn't even try to determine who had done it. Didn't matter. He was black and on the white side of town. He didn't rape a white girl or commit any other crime. I knew him. He was a quiet, mild-mannered, decent person from a very poor family of sharecroppers. There was no investigation, no prosecution. And the family and black community had no avenue from which to launch a complaint, lest they draw more fire upon themselves. Case closed.
No, it doesn't make the slightest fucking difference that the President of the Unites States is a black man. Meaningless. Doesn't signify a fucking thing. Business as usual. Ignore it an keep on walking. Just like race has been ignored since the founding of the 13 colonies. It's never been an issue; don't make it one now. Like a cat, cover it up and walk away. It didn't have anything to do with a civil war that nearly ripped the country apart. By no means should you acknowledge it, especially in an international venue like the Nobel Peace Prize. Madness!! No, worse than madness, it's.....RACISM!!!!! OMFG! Oh noes!!!

It's pretty tame compared to the pledge.andrewclunn wrote:If a student does, sure. but if it's school or teacher sanctioned? No way. That's tax payer funded, and nobody should be forced to pay to have their children brainwashed with messages they don't agree with.

Please complete that bit of rhetoric with some rational support for equating/comparing Obama with a dictator.andrewclunn wrote:

You haven't been following the right-wing carpet-chewers from Korea, have you? They are enraged that Obama won the election. They are afraid, because Limbaugh, Beck and the Official Voice of the Republican Party, aka Fox News, says they should be. No other reason is needed, required, or exists.FBM wrote:Please complete that bit of rhetoric with some rational support for equating/comparing Obama with a dictator.

Obama's coming to Seoul next month. Maybe I'll get a chance to ask him how he feels about all this.Gawdzilla wrote:You haven't been following the right-wing carpet-chewers from Korea, have you? Ask him if he considers himself Hitler, because the wingnuts certainly do.FBM wrote:Obama's coming to Seoul next month. Maybe I'll get a chance to ask him how he feels about all this.
Re: Barack Obama wins the Nobel Peace prize
It wasn't meant to equate him with a dictator. It was meant to point out how absurd it is to care more about the identity politics of a candidate than their actual politics. I don't care what race Obama or any other political leader is. If you make race a plus, it can also be a minus. Morgan Freeman's quote illustrates that he saw that. I posted the video of Hitchens taking the exact same position as conservative pundits to show something here. (it's on the previous page if you missed it.) There's a reason why we need to be critical thinkers first and right-left leaning second, because otherwise we start defending patently ridiculous claims because they're on "our team." I don't hold anything against Obama for this award. He didn't ask for it. But to say he deserves it just because of his race? Come on. Really?FBM wrote:Please complete that bit of rhetoric with some rational support for equating/comparing Obama with a dictator.
