For me the problem lies with framing autonomous vehicles within the paradigm of personal transport. It would be far more practical to think about how we might devise integrated transport systems with autonomous elements rather than simply trying to wedge autonomous vehicles into the disparate systems we have at present. Freight and haulage are obvious places to start.
