The cases that made it into our news were executed after a duration of imprisonment when here they would have been eligible for conditional release.

Yep - I took a long shot bet that the 'publicans would take the Senate. It's supposed to be there for 30 days, and I think it's getting close, or already passed. The election was in early November, but I recall it was a week or two before I got around to popping that phrase up on my signature. I'm giving Ian his bet's worth....

Trolls trolling trolls troll for the lulz.
Just a different target.
No nobility there.
Except Sandy isn't a troll, nor gawd. Too much missing - such as substance - to qualify.

Fixate much nutter? :nutter:

As an aside, I too only troll trolls.
Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

Trolling requires specifically targeted, well generated posts which elicit extreme over-reaction.

In which case, you are a fail troll.

Don't Panic wrote:The death penalty is a good thing. Why crowd the prison system and waste taxpayer money just so that you lock someone up for god so many years? Locking someone up for many years is a form of torture. It is much more humane to just kill them. All that you are doing is pro-longing the suffering by keeping them alive. There is nothing wrong with sentencing someone to death for serious crimes. They are a lost cause and it is highly illogical to confine them in small spaces for years on end instead of just giving them a quick injection or the guillotine.
This is the first thing you've written here that I can say I agree with.

You agree with that? Damn.
I been a long time supporter of capital punishment, the prison system is a drain on the economy.
Oh dear god, you said that out loud.

Can we get a few priorities straight? If you're making an economic argument then, leaving aside the fact that execution costs more than imprisonment, are you really telling me that this is the best assault you can make on the national debt? Do me a favour.
Not the only reason, but an effective one, you say capital punishment doesn't reduce crime rates, it certainly prevents the same person from committing that crime again, and the prisons are full of repeat offenders.

I don't care that you disagree with me, but no amount of education will alter a psychopathic or sociopathic personality.
I don't think the economic argument will fly. I presume that most people advocating capital punishment will reserve it for murder, rather than manslaughter, and even some murder cases may have extenuating circumstances. The total number of people that you would remove from the prison population each year, especially in Europe and other places with low murder rates, would be an insignificant fraction of the total.

An additional argument for capital punishment in this thread (mainly Gawd, I think) was a rather strange argument that keeping prisoners in jail for a very long time was cruel; he emphasised "being stuck in tiny boxes". FFS, in western countries, most long-term jail inmates have TVs, exercise periods, relatively comfortable cells, adequate if boring food, and social contact. We're not talking solitary confinement here.

The one issue that concerns me are the cases (admittedly rare, but they do exist) of people who have served time for violent sex crimes and the like, been released, and re-offended. Surely by now we can ensure that life really does mean life for those offenders with a chance of committing such crimes again.
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?
And my gin!

if that is the case, trolls have far more to say than you, amazing, so, what does that make you? Just a moron?

And does this really seem like a suitable punishment for someone who has committed murder?

Try them, convict them, and shoot them. End of problem. If a few innocents die in the process then so be it, because crime rates will decrease if you know that within a month of being convicted of murder, you too will be dead.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

I don't know if crime rates would drop significantly, but I sure would sleep better at night.
