It's common sense around these parts to be able to survive a couple of weeks off grid. Well, it's actually uncommon sense if the number of people out buying water and cans of Barf-a-Roni just before a hurricane are any indication. In any case, having enough food, gas, water etc. to survive a couple of weeks is a rational precaution. If it goes on any longer than that then it's time to GTFO of Dodge.

Oh wow! Two V-22 Ospreys just came over about 50 feet above the house, rotors full up for a landing at the airport. Loud mothers, most fucking cool. Wonder what's up? Should I get the guns loaded?

Why would anyone live in a hurriance/earthquake zone?, its a bit of siege mentality?

All these things are about probability.
When the risk of a harmful event is low, we accept that risk. Whenever we get into the car to drive to work, we accept the risk of a drunk driver crashing into us and killing us. We accept the risk because we see the alternative - no car ride - as worse. However, the smart person will use a modern car with ABS brakes and an air bag, and will fasten seat belts, to reduce the risk.

I spent a year living in Wellington, New Zealand, where the risk of earthquake is high. There was an earthquake in 1855 estimated at 9 on the Richter scale, which is enough to kill thousands. However, people still happily live there, accepting the risk of being killed is sufficiently low. In fact, what happened, here in NZ, is that there has been no significant earthquake in Wellington since 1855, but a very nasty one struck the city of Christchurch, killing well over 100 people and causing billions of dollars of damage, in spite of the fact that this was the first such earthquake for 16,000 years (estimated).

It is the risks that
a. Are significant in probability, and
b. We can control
that we work on.

I've live in hurricane zones, earthquake zones, on the sides of active volcanoes, in Tornado Alley, big deal.
