Yep, and his son is poised to seize the legacy and possibly rot it even further, because he already started with a lot.

The boy Murdoch was never going to retain control after Daddy died - the present debacle is simply one illustration of why he has never been up to that role.

By the way, did anyone else remember submit their views to Culture Secretary Jeremy **** before the Friday deadline? I did.
Over the years Murdoch has given us no reasons to trust him and every reason to distrust him.

He barely bothers to disguise his intentions or agenda either in politics or business, and yet our political elite never do a thing to stop him. They bend over backwards to accommodate him, while he laughs in their (and, by proxy, our) faces.

Dirty tricks, corruption, blackmail and bullying are, and always have been integral parts of News Corporation's business model. Lies, misrepresentation and playing to the most base of human emotion have always been the cornerstone of its output.

Let us please wipe the smile of this vile man's face.
Could have thought of something better than that if I'd taken the time over it, but I couldn't really be arsed.

I'm sure it won't be read anyhow.

What's the problem? What's the threat to democracy? Why the objections?
He owns an estimated 25% of UK media including papers, TV etc. (and the Times!). He does not pay taxes in the UK and is not a British citizen. This state of affairs would not actually be legal in most of Europe and (I read) America. In addition until this mould changing episode, the generally received wisdom was that you could only win a general election if you got the Murdoch press on our side, in particular the Sun, which would always plumb for one leader or another. Prime Ministers from Thatcher onwards sidled up to Murdoch and always tried to win his favour one way or another to get the press on their 'side'. This always looked creepy, but politicians didn't know what else to do. It looked like Murdoch had a major part to play in our democratic process..undemocratically. Now, without doubt, the game has been changed.

The meta issue here is his bid to gain overall control of BSkyB, a big TV outfit, which he currently has a 39% share of. It looked like he was going to win his bid, but now it will go on hold at least for a few months. Hopefully he will lose the bid.

It does rather look like all sorts has been going on behind the scenes. I am not a conspiracy nut by a long shot, but the phone hacking scandal laid on top of the Sky bid looks like a rather 'odd' coincidence.

The Times (another of NI's papers) is now being looked at following claims that they obtained personal info about Gordon Brown by dubious means. You just couldn't make this shit up!

(Actually, had they been unable to obtain anything, they almost certainly WOULD have made something up! :hehe: )

Ooh, it's been quite some years since The Times deserved the label "highbrow".

Done!

It has occurred to me today that what the Murdoch press has been doing all these years is quietly threatening blackmail to anyone who wouldn't tow their line or at least cooperate with their interests. All you had to do to get your life ruined was not play the game. Gordon Brown, following News Internationals invasion of privacy concerning the illness of his little boy attended Brook's wedding, despite apparently being distraught about their behaviour. Probably because he was frightened of the fallout if he didn't.

Anyway the politicians smell blood now. Let's hope the press don't get too hamstrung as a result. A stifled press is probably a worse scenario than a corrupt one.
