Hi-tech vault under Lincoln Castle could house Magna Carta
THE Magna Carta could soon be buried beneath Lincoln Castle in its own purpose-built vault.
The underground vault is the latest development in Lincoln Castle's £18.9 million renovation project and would also house the city's copy of the Charter of the Forest.
Magna Carta's vault would incorporate a state-of-the-art audio and visual area, which would show films about the history of the document and the impact it has had on modern democracy.
The vault itself will be made accessible to tourists by a grand staircase. A lift may also be installed for disabled visitors.
Mary Powell, the county council's tourism development manager, said: "By digging down we can steal space and put in this completely separate modern build for Magna Carta, which is a huge gain.
"The advantage of going underground is that Magna Carta likes to be somewhere cool and dark – it doesn't need windows and neither would the cinema.
"Heritage Lottery have been very supportive and is very comfortable with the revised plans."
