Did you see the bit about the co-director of PETA? She's alive only thanks to medicines tested on animals.

Yeah, I've also seen the part where they 'euthanise' animals themselves... :what:

I don't agree with what they do, but I can see where they're coming from.

The whole concept of "animal rights" seems laughable to me. Animals have rights? Like, their own country? With prisons for animals who encroach on other animal's rights?

Why? Someone near here burned a kitten alive. Does that kitten not have a right to live its life not being tortured by bored 14 year olds?

I'm not saying it's not wrong for 14 year olds to burn kittens, but the immorality inherent in the action has to do with the cruelty of the perpetrator, not the "rights" of the victim. There is a difference when it comes to domesticated animals, as the kitten only finds itself in a vulnerable position due to human interference in the first place. Otherwise, animals wouldn't assign us any more rights than we should assign them.

:-|

And the animals that PETA set out to "rescue" are generally in a vulnerable position due to human interference in the first place, so I don't see how it's not relevant. If we breed/capture animals and have them in captivity, we have a responsibility to ensure those animals have a life as free from pain and unnecessary suffering as possible. I'm willing to bet that this is what most people are thinking of when they use the term "animal rights."

Anything else is merely getting tied up in semantics, which is pointless, and dangerously close to strawman territory.

As for this:
FrigidSymphony wrote:Otherwise, animals wouldn't assign us any more rights than we should assign them.
Pah. Stepping outside the confines of domesticity, which is where we really should be as it's more relevant to the topic of PETA; Humans have reason and logic, and these give us a powerful advantage over most, if not all, of the animal kingdom, in most environments & circumstances. Quite simply, we should know better. Honestly. If all the animals went marching off the Brooklyn Bridge like lemmings, should you do it, too?

Now, I can understand vegetarians, vegans even both with a myriad of reasons to not eat meat or meat based products.
But I do not quite "get" what PETA are trying to achieve by "supporting" violent reaction. Now if PETA were more like the RSPCA, which additionally to ACTUALLY CARING FOR THE ANIMALS, they also have the authority to present cases to the police/CPA to punish those found guilty of animal cruelty and all that without firebombing anyone.

And I, personally, believe that animal experimentation should be allowed where the potential benefit to humanity, and not just a profit motive, must be shown. (So no more "makup" tests on hares for example, but fruit flies involved with testing genetic science, are all good.)
