Got songs about stuff that would fit in this forum? Here's where to post them. I'll be posting the lyrics to my songs too, since I don't expect everyone to sit through them before critiquing them, and also because I cannot always find a good recording on youtube.
I'll start us off with a song about lawn grass, but it's not really about lawns or grass as such.
Zoysia -The Bottle Rockets wrote:
In my neck of the woods,
the town where I live,
it's out in the sticks
and conservative.
Got lots of churches,
we got lots of bars,
and the kids 'round here
they fight our wars.
Out on the left,
out on the right,
they're always arguing
wrong and right.
But in the meantime,
life just goes on,
We pay our bills.
We mow our lawns.
Chorus:
If your neighbor gets the Zoysia grass,
buddy, you get Zoysia too.
And maybe if you hurt yourself,
he'll mow your lawn for you.
I was riding 'round,
listening to the radio.
Why they say those things
I just don't know.
Some states are red;
some states are blue.
We like to simplify
and believe it's true.
Chorus
Out on the lawns
we got campaign signs.
We always know
when it's election time.
The guy next door,
his signs aren't like mine.
But he's all right,
and we get along fine.
Chorus
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

The Net is best considered analogous to communication with disincarnate intelligences. As any neophyte would tell you. Do not invoke that which you have no facility to banish.

Here's one of my favorites, though it's old, it's still very relevant.
I Ain't Afraid - Holly Near
I ain't afraid of your Yahweh
I ain't afraid of your Allah
I ain't afraid of your Jesus
I'm afraid of what you do in the name of your God
I ain't afraid of your churches
I ain't afraid of your temples
I ain't afraid of your praying
I'm afraid of what you do in the name of your God
verse
Rise up to your higher power
Free up from fear, it will devour you
Watch out for the ego of the hour
The ones who say they know it
Are the ones who will impose it on you
I ain't afraid of your Yahweh
I ain't afraid of your Allah
I ain't afraid of your Jesus
I'm afraid of what you do in the name of your God
I ain't afraid of your churches
I ain't afraid of your temples
I ain't afraid of your praying
I'm afraid of what you do in the name of your God
verse
Rise up, and see /find/ know/ hear a higher story
Free up from the gods of war and glory
Watch out for the threats of purgatory
The spirit of the wind won’t make a killing off of sin and satan
I ain't afraid of your Bible
I ain't afraid of your Torah
I ain't afraid of your Koran
Dont let the letter of the law
Obsure the spirit of the your love--it's killing us
I ain't afraid of your Yahweh
I ain't afraid of your Allah
I ain't afraid of your Jesus
I'm afraid of what you do in the name of your God
I ain't afraid of your churches
I ain't afraid of your temples
I ain't afraid of your praying
I'm afraid of what you do in the name of your God

Atheists have always argued that this world is all that we have, and that our duty is to one another to make the very most and best of it. ~Christopher Hitchens~

God is dead, in my shed
Better red than dead
Living in my head
Best unsaid
Filling me with dread
God is dead in my shed
Better dead than red
The dog is fed
God is dead, definitely dead
I wouldn't lie to you
Chicago school
Treats us like fools
Viva Chavez, Viva Allende
God is Dead
Buried in my shed
The free market
Is still not dead
Wartime leaders
Get Nobel peace prizes
God is dead
He's definitely dead
Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.
Here's a couple of great songs by canaduh's greatest artist Garnet Rogers.
JUNIOR
It's Howdy Doody Time
Born on second base
You thought you'd hit a double
Daddy and his rich friends
Bailed you out of trouble
I watch you as you work the crowd
Your eyes too bright, your voice too loud
Ah Junior, you're doing your daddy proud
It's hard to do your job
When you're always on vacation
They're pulling your strings
From an undisclosed location
You're kicking ass and taking names
You're filling up the jails
You're tapping our phones
You're opening my mail
But God's on your side, Junior
How can you fail?
Another rich man's war, another poor man's fight
Keep the flag draped coffins
Hidden from sight
In Washington there's 50,000 names on the wall
You can't name one of them
You were drunk and AWOL
And we're supposed to come when you call
So you were born on second base
Or maybe it was third
You're wrapped in the Flag
You mouth holy words
But are you getting nervous Junior?
Your numbers are hurtin'
Even your best friends are looking uncertain
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain
Yeah I'm sick of your lies
I'm sick of the games
All of your friends
They all sound the same
Well, have your phony war
But not in my name
You don't speak for me.
Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

That's a nice walk down memory lane...thanks sandinista!

Ever relevant and ever wonderful (I know it by off by heart at this stage):
No one likes us
I don't know why.
We may not be perfect
But heaven knows we try.
But all around even our old friends put us down.
Let's drop the big one and see what happens.
We give them money
But are they grateful?
No they're spiteful
And they're hateful.
They don't respect us so let's surprise them;
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them.
Now Asia's crowded
And Europe's too old.
Africa's far too hot,
And Canada's too cold.
And South America stole our name.
Let's drop the big one; there'll be no one left to blame us.
Bridge:
We'll save Australia;
Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo.
We'll build an all-American amusement park there;
They've got surfing, too.
Well, boom goes London,
And boom Paris.
More room for you
And more room for me.
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another American town.
Oh, how peaceful it'll be;
We'll set everybody free;
You'll have Japanese kimonos, baby,
There'll be Italian shoes for me.
They all hate us anyhow,
So let's drop the big one now.
Let's drop the big one now.
God has no place within these walls, just like facts have no place within organized religion. - Superintendent Chalmers
It's not up to us to choose which laws we want to obey. If it were, I'd kill everyone who looked at me cock-eyed! - Rex Banner
The Bluebird of Happiness long absent from his life, Ned is visited by the Chicken of Depression. - Gary Larson
You're very welcome maiforpeace, Phil Och's music is as valid today as it was decades ago. He was without a doubt the most intelligent and on target folk singer of, not only his time, but all time. It is depressing in a way that his songs are as valid today as when they were written.
