New-Born Baby Sold Twice

By Kim Sue-young

A couple in their 20s has been caught for selling their three-day-old baby in May for two million won (about $1,600) on the Internet, according to Daegu Seobu Police Station Wednesday.

Police also reported that the recipient then sold the baby again one hour later for 4.6 million won.

A 28-year-old woman identified as Ryu, who lived with a 22-year-old Lee, gave birth to the baby girl but decided to give up the infant due to financial difficulties.

While searching information regarding adoption on the Internet, they found out that a 26-year-old woman identified by her surname Ahn was looking for a baby. The couple handed over the baby to her at a cafe in Ulsan for the money. But Ahn then gave the infant ― just one hour later ― to a Baek whom she also got to know through the Internet.

Ahn denied that she received any payment.

Baek is believed to have bought the baby in order to adopt an infant quickly and leave no adoption record, according to the police station.

Korea's deeply rooted kinship and rumors that an adoption costs tens of millions won have led people to refrain from adopting through agencies.

According to Daegu, adoption agencies in the city helped only 122 babies find new homes last year.

Shipping is going to be a pain in the ass.

Then again, I'd actually be able to be tell this joke honestly, "What the difference between a sports car and a pile of dead babies?"

"There isn't a sports car in my garage." Zing.

I'm going to atheist hell, aren't I?

I learned from The Life of Brian to always look on the bright side of life...The kid wasn't abandoned or abused and will never have a memory of the event. The parents are just like so many others and wanted to avoid the cost and hassle of adoption agency fees. Considering how things might've turned out, this doesn't look like so much of a tragedy to me. :dono:

That depends on your definition of abandonment, and commodification of children is exploitative - and can be a form of abuse in itself, of children and of mothers-to-be. As to other forms of abuse, anything is possible when a child can be traded from one person to another, in this case more than once. Sad when a person values financial gain over the welfare of an infant.

Ah. By abandonment, I mean left in a dumpster somewhere or on somebody's doorstep in a basket. Also, I was thinking only of the parents' choice to give the baby up for adoption. Not the middle-mom. Yeah, the profiteering middle-mom coont should have her vagina stretched with the Jaws of Life. I don't think the parents themselves did anything more than try to avoid the complication of involving an adoption agency. I can imagine finding myself in that position. I'd make better choices, but I can imagine it.
