Australia is currently having a Royal Commission on Anti-semitism, prompted by the Bondi shootings. https://asc.royalcommission.gov.au

What various reports don't seem to make clear is the origin of anti-semitic rants and actions. To me, there seems to be three main strands, with very different antecedents:

1. Classical Nazi-style, espoused clearly by modern neo-Nazi groups. It has origins in European history, Christian teachings (the Jews as Christ killers) and has clear connections to white supremacist teachings.

2. Fundamentalist Islam - it would seem that the Bondi shooters were of this ilk. It has connections to general opposition to the actions of the Israeli government, and is probably inflamed by Gaza etc. but would exist even without that.

3. Some parts of the "hard left" go beyond reasoned opposition to the actions of the current Israeli government, and edge into genuine anti-semitism. Many would say that calling for the destruction of the state of Israel edges into that territory.

The irony is that people fitting into any of those 3 strands would in most ways detest the other two...

In Melbourne last year, some people in a pro-Palestinian protest march broke away and violently trashed a Jewish restaurant.

I look forward to the royal commissions on islamophobia, sexism, misogyny and the gender pay gap, ableism, transphobia, systemic/systematic discrimination against children and young people, and the silencing of Christian views on abortion and the family.

I suspect that the majority of the anti-semitic hate posts on social media in Oz derive from my first group.
