An NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll found that independent voters remain unconvinced by both the president’s and Democrat’s plans for the future, although they agree with some liberal platforms such as Medicare for all who want it and universal background checks. What do you think?

Would his supporters finally renounce him if the US went into recession?

It will be the Obama recession, that Trump by sheer willpower has held off.

Of course not. They'll blame it on the socialist radical far-left Democrat party. Oh, and immigrants and minorities too.

Chinese conspiracy. Don't you know how they manipulate exchange rates unfairly to their own advantage?

They probably wouldn't notice a recession in their everyday lives. Technical definitions based on GDP growth don't mean much if you're in the bottom quintile by income, where adjusted earnings have fallen by 1% since 1979, or the second quintile where adjusted earnings have risen only by only 1%. The earnings of the third quintile have risen by 3% in the same period. Their jobs are already insecure and firms lay people off to maintain the share price or meet their debt obligations, public spending is only ever cut, and savings rates are static. What would actually change?

The retired baby boomers and those working in the flexible gig-economy aside, on present form Republican voters who lost their jobs in a recession would still rather blame China, Muslims, cultural Marxism, or pink-haired lesbian video-gamers than look to Trump. I mean, Trump's tariff policy is disproportionately hitting the economically deprived rural areas that backed him and yet his approval among Republican voters is still somewhere above 80%. Trump has a ready made story which acts as an article of faith for Republican voters - it's immigrants and leftist globalisation that killed the beast.

And our father's father's father's father's father's father's father's father's...

Reasoning has so little part in 45's supporters that you can blame anybody and everybody at all, really,

except for Trumpelstilzchen and sweet baby Jesus.
