rape is oil... even if it's not very tasty oil.

It's a bit on the bitter side. Canola is a better choice, which is from a genetically modified (via traditional breeding methods) rapeseed plant that has less of the bitter stuff in it. It's neutral, and a good choice for deep frying because it has a high smoke point. Peanut oil is the best, IMO.

My ex got me onto bran oil. I can't discern any bad taste with it, and apparently it has a higher smoke point than canola.

Peanut oil has too strong a taste. I use it for some asian stir fries, but I wouldn't use it for general cooking.
