I see a correlation between views that we tend to call "extremist" and seeing a necessity to kill to achieve one's objectives. Few people really want to take the religion that is dear to their heart so seriously in day to day life. So the people that want to make everybody take it seriously may tend to use force. Also, if you can''t get popular support for your cause, the frustration and isolation can lead to thoughts of violence.
But a tolerant secularist could see justifying killing to oppose the imposition of a totalitarian theocracy.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
