I've got to say, every time there is footage from a tornado in the States, the majority of houses seem to be made of timber. What gives? Are there no decent building codes in these areas? In fact, why the hell do people live in these areas? What is the main employment in these states? Is it agricultural?

Wood houses are cheaper and easier to build. And, of course, you'd have to have had Bag End to survive the last Moore tornado. The picture above shows what a tornado can do to a brick building.

I'm split between being under a fallen brick wall and dealing with flying splinters. (Splinters were the prime cause of injury in the days of fighting sail.)

That's a good point. Interestingly, a lot of the houses in the cyclone zones of northern Australia are built out of timber. Timber is good in that it is flexible and can absorb some of the wind energy. It just has to be built in such a way as to be able to stay together through the storm. Although, there comes a point where the winds are so fierce that it can't withstand it.

Of course you can. I've seen footage of a bunker built to survive close proximity to an atomic bomb. The instruments inside were perfectly safe. Some folks at JREF are insisting that you can't build anything to survive an EF-5, so why bother building anything. Morons.
