I like Faku's post. That description is of a rational and sensible approach.
laklak, on the other hand, in describing Florida law, is describing an obscenity. People will enter the wrong house sometimes for entirely innocent (well, almost innocent) reasons, where there is no threat to the house holder. For example : a person who is sick and confused (Alzheimers or diabetes) or drunk, or spaced out on certain drugs, may go to the wrong house, but firmly believe it is their own home, and they can therefore break their own window to gain access. In any large nation, with a big population, this will happen hundreds of times each year.
If the householder then shoots them dead without finding out if they pose a threat, that householder is a murderer. As simple as that.
If the killer argues that he/she is not prepared to take the minor risk of being hurt before they shoot, then that killer is not just a murderer, but also an arrant, despicable, yellow bellied coward.
A rational approach to self defense permits the right to defend yourself, but only when such defense is responsible.

For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

More like machiavelli, Sun Tzu was more about statecraft, guerilla and intel gathering than individual matters.
