The Cruelty of Hobbits

The Hobbit: Unexpected Cruelty

When The Hobbit is released in December, audiences will see an adventure story set in a fantasy world. For the animals involved in the filming, however, the abuse and neglect that they experienced were far too real. Recently, PETA gave the Associated Press the exclusive on the reported animal death toll. In all, five horses, a pony, and several goats, sheep, and chickens were allegedly maimed or killed.

According to whistleblowers from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the following occurred:

A horse named Shanghai was hobbled (his legs were tied together so that he couldn't move) and left on the ground for three hours because he was too energetic for his rider. Afterward, in order to hide his rope burns for filming, his legs were covered with makeup and hair. Hobbling is an outright violation of the American Humane Association's (AHA) guidelines.
One horse was killed and another horse was injured after being placed with two highly strung geldings, despite concerns that the geldings would be too aggressive.
Another horse was killed after falling off an embankment in a severely crowded paddock.
When the horses were moved to the stables, another horse died after being fed large amounts of food that he wasn't used to. The horse had shown signs of colic, an extremely painful illness.
When the horses were moved back to the paddocks after this incident, another horse had the skin and muscles of her leg torn away by wire fencing.
Several goats and sheep died from worm infestations and from falling into the sink holes that covered the farm.
Numerous chickens were mauled and killed by unsupervised dogs or trampled by other animals when left unprotected.

(continued, understandable that hobbits might lose control of dogs... :read: )

Sounds like a bunch of unrelated incidents being cobbled together to make a headline, to me.

No mention of the time-span.
Horses were routinely hobbled when I was a kid, and they quickly adjust to the restricion. I never saw one that needed makeup.

Colic is a nasty thing that can kill horses. Even racehorses worth millions are lost to colic. It's very hard to successfully treat or prevent. That piece CLAIMS that the horse was given unsuitable food. I have my doubts about that. I believe it's a kink in the gut that kills the horses.

Films take a long time to shoot. Those incidents spread out over a long period, even if they are true, don't make much of a story. Packed together in an article, which gives the impression of all happening together, it's a false perspective.

Typical journalist's trick.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

I've seen these hobbits come out of the pubs...always leaving their hobbit doors open, nearly stepped on one myself once. :smoke:

So I presume it won't be saying "No animals were harmed during the making of this film" at the end?

We had a news report on TV about this last night. PETA, according to a Canadian spokewoman, has reports of cruelty to animals. The major report was presented by a guy sacked from the job. However, our local SPCA, which has been monitoring the situation, says it is a load of garbage, and there has been no cruelty.
Take your pick.

Believe a bunch of radicals who at best just want publicity and at worse want us to return to a pre-industrial society.

OR

Believe an organisation like SPCA and its affiliates that have made great leaps in preventing animal cruelty and do it largely without publicity nor do retarded stunts.

Easy really. :read:

Which is probably why she went unnoticed among a crowd of Christians.

Even if it's true I don't care. Animal rights is for weak willed women who deservedly are the first to die in any natural disaster situation when they try to save their cat or some dumb shit like that.

Still won't go see the movie, even without any animal cruelty, 'cos it's too short. :coffee:

Wait a while, till they are in DVD, and see them both back to back.

Both? Actually they're stretching the book to three movies. Precisely why I won't see the cow milking shite.

A degree of incompetence in their animal management team; I wouldn't give 'em a job...

But that's about as far as it goes...
