Announce free webinars here

Post by Ronja » Thu Apr 12, 2012 8:04 am

There are a number of organizations in the business of producing information, training material etc. Sometimes some of them offer webinars for free - usually in exchange of your email address (required when you register for the webinar), so they can market their commercial services or products.

If you find out about an upcoming free webinar by a reputable enough organization, please post a short summary - especially including the date, time and timezone - in this thread.

Here's one to get the thread started, about using new and emerging technologies in the context of libraries. It had slinked into my spam box, so sorry for the late warning, it's already TODAY Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 2:00 pm EST, but there seems to be a possibility to watch it afterwards, too (see below).
How can librarians design, develop, and deliver services and programs that promote positive engagement, social endorsement, and expanded reach? How can we leverage the potential of new and emerging technologies to achieve organizational goals, inspire creativity and vision, and prepare for the future? Join us for a presentation that will explore strategies that support innovative practices and maximize the potential of social and mobile technologies.

This free webinar, to be held on Thursday, April 12th at 2:00 pm (EDT), will discuss the various challenges faced by librarians and libraries today. Our host, Lisa Carlucci Thomas, Director of design think do, will also address challenges and barriers to implementation, and recommend tools and techniques for proactive library technology leadership.

To sign up for the webinar, please visit http://www.igi-global.com/advertisement ... nform.aspx. Should you be unable to attend the live symposium on April 12th, please visit our website at http://www.igi-global.com/advertisement ... osium.aspx to view the recorded presentation.
I have never watched an IGI Global webinar before, and I know nothing more about Lisa Carlucci Thomas than what I could Google: http://lisacarlucci.com/about - so there are no guarantees for quality with this one, I am afraid.

It just occurred to me that this thread probably should be in The Seminar. I doubt this will be very active, and in News etc. it will easily sink so far down on the forum list that it won't be remembered or found when needed.

If nobody screams real loud against the move, I'll make it so during the weekend the latest.

Heh, today's webinar provider does not support Linux at all. Oh well, the kids will be in bed, so I'll have access to an XP, too...

Microsoft offers tons of free webinars and web labs for developers, sometimes giving away free stuff to participants. (I got my copy of Visual Studio that way.) I know that vmware offers a lot of educational outreach as well. Not sure about other VM providers like MS or... is it Oracle now? Anyway. No links, but large software firms often offer free educational stuff. And if you're a programmer and want a real education, volunteer for any of the many open source software projects; nothing beats hands on learning.
