Microsoft Patents ‘Avoid Ghetto’ Feature For GPS Devices (CBS Seattle)

REDMOND, Wash. (CBS Seattle) – Microsoft has been granted a patent for its “avoid ghetto” feature for GPS devices.

A GPS device is used to find shortcuts and avoid traffic, but Microsoft’s patent states that a route can be plotted for pedestrians to avoid an “unsafe neighborhood or being in an open area that is subject to harsh temperatures.”

Created for mobile phones, the technology uses the latest crime statistics and weather data and includes them when calculating a route.

The patent, written in a combination of tech-speak and legalese, was awarded to Microsoft earlier this week. It also described other uses for the new GPS technology.

One section of the patent mentioned that advertisers can use the technology to navigate a user through a newly set up ad campaign.

Microsoft declined to comment to CBS Seattle.

Good for them, long past due.

I got off the Interstate in East Saint Louis once and wasn't certain I was going to make it back onto the interstate alive. Same thing happened driving from Palm Springs to LA one time when I got off in West Covina for gas. Times like that make me very glad I carry a concealed handgun everywhere.

A white fella in Philadelphia got into the wrong neighborhood and was stopped by the police who towed his car because he had a suspended license. They refused to give him a ride to a place of safety and left him standing on the roadside alone. He was found the next morning brutally murdered by having a tire carcass filled with gasoline shoved down over his shoulders, pinning his arms, which was then set alight, a favorite murder method of blacks in Africa...and Philadelphia. Cops were eventually sued but as I recall, got off.

I understand Johannesburg, SA is the same. Being white and driving on the wrong side of the street can get you killed, and God help you if you stray into one of the Townships.

Tourists in particular need exactly this kind of information to stay safe in many, if not most large cities.

I hope they have a "race" selection for the user that will provide data based on ethnicity.

I'm fine with that. I imagine the folks of Beverly Hills or the Hamptons would be happy to have their areas marked "avoid - DWB threat area" for black tourists. I imagine blacks wouldn't mind at all having their communities identified as "avoid" areas for white tourists, since some blacks (and some Latinos and some of practically every other ethnic group) are the worst racists and apartheidists around. They like their communities to be cohesively black and I'm fine with that, just tell me where they are so I can not go there and we'll all get along fine.

It's a big country, there's room for everyone to associate, or not associate with whom they please. There's even enough room for MrJonno to live next to child molesters rather than gun owners.

Succesfully passed E St Louis going south. However a drugged pick up driver rear ended us on the interstate. He stopped enough to give his name and disappeared. Spent 2 hours at the Cahokia police station making the report and we drove home with a broken rear window. Insurance company got a little car with dense cigarette smell for us that we drove for a week till we complained.

I have no problems going through East St. Louis. In the daytime anyway. There are places in West County I wouldn't go at night if Ayaan was with me.
