Although he finally relented and committed to join the three-way Iran/Afghanistan/Pakistan dialog, Afghan President Hamid Karzai is still making it clear that Pakistan will be held to account for the murder of Afghan peace jirga chief Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is trying to pull the "he's being mean to me" and Viewing With Alarm horseshit in Dawn (Karzai's position isn't even being printed in the Pakistan Daily Times) but it's pretty hollow. There isn't a lot of place left for Pakistan to stand on this issue. The meeting between Karzai and Gilani occurred during a break in the SAARC conference currently going on; the next meeting with Iran and Pakistan is not yet scheduled, after being delayed by Afghani anger over the assassination.
I have the impression that the Pakistani Army is in trouble with the administration, having severely fucked things up in Afghanistan. They're now being handed responsibility for the entire thing by everyone involved, and frantically trying to figure out how to get out of it. I don't think it's going to work. I hope it doesn't; they've been making messes other people were forced to clean up for decades now. Time to grow up.
Read all about it or anyway as much as the ISI will allow the journalists to print without killing them.
